OAKS' CORNER . . . The Menlo College women's volleyball team remained atop the California Pacific Conference standings following a 30-11, 30-15, 30-20 victory over visiting Pacific Union on Sunday night. Junior Kari Shimomura recorded a team-high 11 kills as the Oaks (11-0, 12-2) won their seventh straight. Senior Cassandra Thomassin and freshman Talia Onosai combined for another 17 kills. Freshman setter Alyssa Chang had 34 assists and 11 digs. Menlo was scheduled to play a doubleheader on Tuesday at UC Santa Cruz, meeting Vassar College in the morning and the host Banana Slugs at night. Menlo defeated visiting Cal State Maritime, 30-10, 30-10, 30-8, on Saturday night as Christa Hewett recorded six service aces . . . Freshman Bora Akkaya scored three goals and as the Menlo College men's soccer team defeated visiting Bethany, 6-0, on Saturday in a California Pacific Conference contest. Sophomore Aidan O'Flynn added a goal and assist as the Oaks (6-10, 4-1 CP) won their third straight. Sophomore goaltender Ramiro Rios recorded three saves and Michael Sharabi and Armando San Vincente also scored. Denis Sztokfisz had a pair of assists . . . Gunn High grad Ja'Net Lawrence scored three goals and added an assist as Menlo defeated visiting Bethany, 7-0, in a Cal Pac Conference match on Friday. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Courson and freshman Allison Uribe each played a half to combine for the shutout, the Oaks (4-1, 12-5-1) ninth of the season. Lawrence, Courson and fellow senior Michelle Lambrecths played their final home match for Menlo. Kerry Gaiz, Katie Sakai,Jenny Skinner and Elaine Strauss also scored.
A BIG HIT . . . When current Colorado Rockies pitcher Jason Young was at Stanford, he made an out in his only career at bat. On Sunday he made up for it, hitting a three-run homer in the annual Alumni baseball game. Stanford freshman Michael Taylor did Young one better though, crushing a grand slam in the Cardinal's 10-8 victory over the Alumni. Palo Alto High grad David Stringer pitched the final three innings to record the save. Menlo-Atherton grad Zachary Gianos, who missed last year after having cartilage removed from his left knee, and Menlo School grad Ryan Seawell also saw action in the game. Stanford opens it baseball season at home on Jan. 28 when Fresno State visits for a three-game series.
WORTH NOTING . . . Former Stanford tennis standout K.J. Hippensteel won the USTA Challenger in Tiburon on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Kevin Kim . . . Two-time NCAA champion while at Stanford, Laura Granville won the USTA Challenger in Ashburn, Virginia on Sunday, beating Lucie Safarova, 6-4, 6-2 . . . Menlo-Atherton grad Hilary Englert, playing for Cal, reached the consolation finals of the St. Mary's Invitational with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Nevada's Bach Lam Pham on Sunday.
COACHING CORNER . . . The Palo Alto Recreation Department is seeking coaches for its volleyball, flag football and basketball programs at the middle school level. Volleyball and flag football begin in early September, and basketball begins in November. Coaches will work 4-5 days a week, with paid and volunteer positions available. Practices held in Palo Alto. Castilleja School is looking for coaches for the upcoming season in varsity track and field in addition to an assistant coach for swimming.
