OAKS RAISE TITLE HOPES . . . The Menlo College women's volleyball team isn't the champion of the Cal Pac Conference yet, but the Oaks certainly took a big step closer with a 17-30, 30-22, 30-25, 31-29 victory over host Notre Dame du Namur on Saturday night in a battle of unbeatens. The Oaks (9-0, 10-2) have a little time to enjoy their time atop the conference standings before Cal State Maritime visits on Saturday at 7 p.m. Menlo, on a five-match winning streak, also beat host Dominican, 30-24, 30-22, 30-11, on Friday night. Against the Argonauts, sophomore Sanoe' Eselu recorded a career-high 20 kills to lead the Oaks attack. Junior Kari Shimomura added 15 kills to go with 23 digs, while senior Cindy Epps had 10 kills. Freshman setter Alyssa Chang had 46 assists and Krista Catian added 19 digs. In the win over Dominican, Chang had 20 digs while Christa Hewett added 15 digs. The Oaks have won 31 of the 39 games they've played this season . . . The Menlo College women's soccer team rebounded from a tough loss to nab a pair of victories over the weekend, beating William Jessup Univerity, 8-0, on Friday, and Mills College, 6-0, on Saturday. Joyce O'Leary scored three times against Mills as the Oaks (4-1, 10-4-1) added to their record-breaking victory total. Michelle Lambrechts and Katie Sakai also scored for Menlo . . . The Menlo College men's soccer team defeated visiting Cal State Maritime, 4-2, on Saturday as Armando San Vicente recorded a goal and assist. Goalie Ramiro Rios had four saves for the Oaks (4-10), who were slated to meet William Jessup on Tuesday . . . The Menlo College football team dropped a 32-22 decision to host Cal Lutheran on Saturday despite 147 rushing yards from Eddie Connor and a pair of field goals by Ray DeSenna. DeSenna also averaged 41.4 yards on eight punts. The Oaks (1-3) took a 20-16 lead with 2:31 remaining in the third quarter on a 4-yard scoring toss from Dustin Guglielmelli ;to Russ Fukushima. Cal Lutheran regained the lead less than a minute later. \Marvin Stickel caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Adam Hazel early in the second quarter.
COACHING CORNER . . . The Palo Alto Recreation Department is seeking coaches for its volleyball, flag football and basketball programs at the middle school level. Volleyball and flag football begin in early September, and basketball begins in November. Coaches will work 4-5 days a week, with paid and volunteer positions available. Practices held in Palo Alto.
