Around Town Around Town (October 06, 2004)

UNION PREZ'S RUN ... Last year, the president of the Palo Alto Firefighters Union,Tony Spitaleri, chastised the City Council for the way it chose to staff a seasonal fire station. Now, Spitaleri is fighting to be on the other end of such fiery criticism. Spitaleri, a retired Palo Alto firefighter, has reportedly taken out papers to run for the City Council in Sunnyvale, where he lives. "There are some exciting things happening, and I want to make sure I have some input in it, and can bring my knowledge and experience to the table," he reportedly told a Sunnyvale Sun reporter. ART DAY ... You can take a guided walk around downtown Palo Alto's public art on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Several new projects will be unveiled, including the controversial Digital DNA, a 7-foot tall egg-shaped sculpture planned for Lytton Plaza. The event will start at City Hall Plaza (250 Hamilton Ave.) by the installation of the Color of Palo Alto artwork. The walk, sponsored by the Palo Alto Art Commission, will then walk around the 10 recently spruced-up utility boxes.
WEBSITE UPGRADES... It became easier to follow various construction projects through the Palo Alto process this week. On Monday, the City of Palo Alto sent its first e-mail to interested parties outlining all of the permits that developers and homeowners applied for during the past two weeks. To sign up for the e-mails, go to www.cityofpaloalto.org/subscribe.html. The city also recently launched a new Web site to more clearly spell out that process.
