POETRY AND JAZZ . . . Sharon Olson, a Palo Alto librarian, has had her poetry manuscript, "The Long Night of Flying," accepted for publication by Sixteen Rivers Press. Olson's poem, "Camino del Medio," can be seen on the Midtown Poetry Wall (at the Walgreen's on Middlefield Road). She is also one of the emcees for monthly poetry readings at the ART 21 Gallery, 539 Alma St., whose next event, "All That and Jazz" will be at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17. Valerie Berry, a Palo Alto poet and physician, will read that night. Norm Cooperman will be on piano and Rick Gray will be on bass.

A LIFE'S WORK . . . Local portrait photographer Margo Davis will have a compilation of three decades of her work published, "Under One Sky," on Sept. 6. In addition, a show of her work is at the T.W. Stanford Art Gallery at 419 Lausen Mall near Hoover Tower, with a closing reception and book signing 5-7 p.m. Sept. 28. The gallery is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

TOUGH DECISIONS . . . Dr. Thomas Plante, a Stanford clinical associate professor of psychiatry and behavior sciences, has written "Do the Right Thing: Living Ethically in an Unethical World."

AUTHOR, AUTHOR . . . Author events at Kepler's in Menlo Park this month include local writer Firozzah Dumas and other contributors ("My California") at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 8 in a benefit event for the California Arts Council. Novelist David Schlickler ("Sweet and Vicious") appears at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14. Legendary California State Librarian Kevin Starr ("Coast of Dreams") appears at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27. And journalist Dan Fesperman ("The Warlord's Son") appears at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30.
