NOTEWORTHY . . . The Menlo-Atherton girls volleyball team opened their season with a 20-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 victory over Half Moon Bay in the first round of the Burlingame Invitational on Wednesday. The Bears were scheduled to meet the host Panthers on Thursday for the right to advance to Friday's 7 p.m. championship match . . . The Stanford Quake, a nationally-ranked Palo Alto Under-18 girls CYSA soccer team, won the championship of the Davis Summer Shoot-Out tournament over the weekend. The Quake defeated the Mount Diablo Arsenal 1-0 in the championship game Sunday afternoon, after an 11-1 scoring difference against its opponents in three preliminary games. Palo Alto resident Austinn Freeman . scored for the Quake. In bracket play, the Quake defeated the San Francisco Vikings 3-1, the Dublin New Crew 2-0 and the Napa Edge 6-0. Other Quake players include Palo Alto's Rachel Hamilton, Lindsey Stirrat . and Lisa Johnson; . Portola Valley's Katherine Daiss . and Atherton's Kelley Finch . and Nicole Kalinske.

COACHING CORNER . . .
The Palo Alto Recreation Department is seeking coaches for its volleyball, flag football and basketball programs at the middle school level. Volleyball and flag football begin in early September, and basketball begins in November. Coaches will work 4-5 days a week, with paid and volunteer positions available. Practices held in Palo Alto. Castilleja School is looking for coaches for the upcoming season in varsity cross country, JV water polo, JV tennis, varsity track and field in addition to an assistant coach for swimming. Menlo-Atherton High is looking for a number of coaches for the 2004-05 season: frosh-soph softball, frosh-soph volleyball, girls' JV lacrosse, girls' varsity lacrosse and cheerleading. ON THE LINKS . . . The inaugural Tony Makjavich Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Sept. 11 at Moffett Field Golf Course. The event honors the former Palo Alto Oaks' baseball manager, who died last year after a memorable 45-plus years of coaching the Palo Alto-based semipro team. Proceeds from the tournament will go towards funding the Oaks, thus preserving Makjavich's legacy with the team. Cost for the tournament, which will be played as a scramble, is $150 per person and includes green fees, cart, prizes and a tri-top BBQ dinner. Cost for a foursome is $500, or $125 per person. A shotgun start gets things under way at 1:30 p.m. For those who want to attend the dinner only, cost is $20. Sponsorships also are available. SOCCER NEWS . . . The Major League Soccer Camp will run its camp programs for boys and girls ages five and older at the Cubberley Community Center fields between Aug. 16 and 20 from 9 a.m.-noon and 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Cost is between $100-$135. The MVLA CyberRays, a first season CYSA Girls Under-13 Class 1 soccer team, are looking for players from Menlo Park, Palo Alto and Los Altos Hills among other local cities. OF LOCAL NOTE . . . The Stanford Water Polo Club is accepting applications for the fall session. The program is designed for boys not currently playing high school water polo. There is no minimum age or skills requirement, though a swimming background is helpful. The session runs from Sept. 7 through Oct. 31. Deadline for registration is Sept. 5.
