Weekend Preview Weekend Preview (August 25, 2004)

Folk singer and autoharpist Adam Miller will perform on Sunday at the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts. Miller will appear at 10 a.m. on the Webster Street stage.

New paintings by Janice Wilson will be on display through Sept. 18 at Gallery House in Palo Alto.
Thursday

"A Little Princess"
will preview tonight and Friday at 8 p.m. at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro St. Presented by TheatreWorks, the show will officially open on Saturday at 8 p.m. Based on Frances Hodgson Burnett's treasured novel, "A Little Princess" chronicles the life of Sara Crewe, the daughter of a wealthy gentleman whose charmed life takes a dramatic turn when her father is tragically killed in action. Additional show times are Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. (Aug. 31 and Sept. 7 only); Wednesdays through Fridays at 8 p.m.; Saturdays at 8 p.m. (additional 2 p.m. performances Sept. 4 and 18); Sundays at 2 p.m. (additional 7 p.m. performance Aug. 29; 7 p.m. only on Sept. 12). "Plants, Planets, Planes and Waves," featuring paintings by Judy Gittelsohn, will be on display through Aug. 31 at Design Within Reach, 151 University Ave. in Palo Alto. Gallery House

The Palo Alto Festival of the Arts
will take place today and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on University Avenue, between High and Webster streets. The event will feature more than 300 artisans, Italian street painting, three stages of entertainment, California microbrews and wines, gourmet foods and the Kids' Art Corner. Admission is free. "Question" will be on display through Jan. 2 at the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University. This experimental project is designed to provoke and address questions frequently asked by visitors about art and its presentation in museums. "Kids Dance for Kids"
will be presented today at 1:30 and 4 p.m. at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts' SecondStage, 500 Castro St. Multicultural dance and music will be presented by child performers from local dance companies, including Raices de Mexico (Mexican folklore), Hula 'O Lokelani (Hawaiian and Tahitian dance) and STEPZ Dance Inc. (East Indian modern and traditional dance). There will be two show times: 1:30 and 4 p.m. Tickets are $6 adults; $2 seniors, free for children 14 years old or younger. "Watercolors: California and Kauai," featuring works by Barbara von Haunalter, will run Aug. 25 through Sept. 26 at Portola Valley Art Gallery. The gallery is also currently featuring "Thrown and Altered Stoneware Vessels" by Jean Prophet. The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 765 Portola Valley Road (behind the Old School House at the end of the library building.) " Carnaval" will be presented today from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Palo Alto Art Center, 1313 Newell Road in Palo Alto. The community is invited to make their own Carval mask and learn the samba. A cooking demonstration with Ronda Priestner, in which she will make Brazil's national dish, feijoada, will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Both events are part of the Art Center's current exhibition, "From Brazil: Palmo Quadrado & Indigenous Arts from the Amazon Basin," which will run through Sept. 5. The exhibition includes works on paper and photographs created by 46 contemporary Brazilian artists. Admission is free. "Gizmos & Gadgets," is currently on display at the Palo Alto Junior Museum & Zoo, 1451 Middlefield Road. This new exhibition demonstrates how work can be made easier with simple machines such as levers and incline planes. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
