STANFORD LEGEND PASSES . . . Funeral services for former Stanford men's basketball great George Yardley were held in Newport Beach on Thursday. Yardley, who passed away at his home in Newport Beach last week at the age of 75 of Lou Gehrig's Disease, played at Stanford between 1947-50 and went on to play in the NBA where he became the first player in history to score more than 2,000 points in a season. He led the NBA in scoring in 1957-58 with a 27.8 average and was named an All-Star six times in his seven professional seasons. At Stanford, Yardley led the Cardinal in scoring as a senior at 16.9, while breaking Hank Luisetti's 12-year-old Pacific Coast Conference scoring record. Yardley, a member of the Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame, is survived by four children and 14 grandchildren.

OF LOCAL NOTE . . . The 16-Under and 14-Under boys Stanford Water Polo Club teams each brought home a bronze medal from the Junior Olympic competition in Fort Lauderdale. Eight Stanford players also earned All-American status. Atherton residents Brandon Child and Carter Brutschy were honored from the 18-Under team, while Atherton's Ben Hohl, Los Altos Hills' Michael Orton and Matt Hudnal were honored from the 16-Under team. Menlo Park's Tim Norton, Los Altos Hills' Tim Cole and Spencer Fletcher were honored from the 14-Under team . . . Gunn grad Andrew Jacobsen returns for his sophomore season with the California men's soccer team. Jacobsen appeared in 22 games and started once last year, recording an assist and taking 15 shots. He will be joined by Menlo-Atherton grad Javier Hill, a freshman at Cal . . . Lamont Quattlebaum, who coached both the boys and girls basketball teams at Sacred Heart Prep, has taken the head men's basketball coaching position at Canada College, where he played his collegiate ball. Among his new players will be Pinewood School grad Kyle Scheppler. "We are building from the ground up," Quattlebaum said. "As a high school coach in this area, I've seen the players and I know the coaches. We can win."
COACHING CORNER . . .
Castilleja School is looking for coaches for the upcoming season in varsity cross country, JV water polo, JV tennis, varsity track and field in addition to an assistant coach for swimming. ON THE LINKS . . . The inaugural Tony Makjavich Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Sept. 11 at Moffett Field Golf Course. The event honors the former Palo Alto Oaks' baseball manager, who died last year after a memorable 45-plus years of coaching the Palo Alto-based semipro team. Proceeds from the tournament will go towards funding the Oaks, thus preserving Makjavich's legacy with the team. Cost for the tournament, which will be played as a scramble, is $150 per person and includes green fees, cart, prizes and a tri-top BBQ dinner. Cost for a foursome is $500, or $125 per person. A shotgun start gets things under way at 1:30 p.m. For those who want to attend the dinner only, cost is $20. Sponsorships also are available. SOCCER NEWS . . . The Major League Soccer Camp will run its camp programs for boys and girls ages five and older at the Cubberley Community Center fields between Aug. 16 and 20 from 9 a.m.-noon and 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Cost is between $100-$135.
