Legislation pushes for healthy foods
Legislation pushes for healthy foods
(July 14, 2004) Palo Alto's schools are not alone in the charge toward healthier eating habits. Thanks to state legislation over the past two years, school districts across the state are taking strides toward fighting bad eating habits. Here's a list of what's been done so far:
*School beverages: On July 1, state law banned soda from elementary and middle schools cafeterias and vending machines.
*Lunch menus: Pending state legislation would require public schools to post nutritional content of each food item served on campus.
*High school food: Pending legislation would restrict the sale of sodas at high schools.
*School beverage contracts: In 2003, state law was passed requiring school boards to hold public hearings before contracting with any carbonated beverage companies, as well as notifying parents once those contracts are approved.
