NATIONAL TEAMS . . . The United States men's Olympic water polo team lost, 11-8, to Hungary on Wednesday night in FINA World League play at the Coggan Family Aquatic Complex in La Jolla in front of 2,325 fans. Stanford senior Tony Azevedo scored twice for the Americans, while Stanford grads Wolf Wigo and Peter Hudnut each added a goal. Team USA had beaten Hungary on Monday night. "IN that game we played the pass and finesse game," Hudnut said. "This time it was more physical. We showed them that we were able to play both games and that we can adjust; that we're not going to back down." Azevedo scored both of his goals in the closing minutes of the third quarter to tie the match at 7. Team USA meets Serbia and Montenegro on Saturday at USC's McDonald's Swim Center in Los Angeles . . . The U.S. national baseball team lost all five games it played over the weekend in Japan. Stanford junior John Mayberry, Jr. went 2-for-15 in the series but hit a home run and drove in two runs. Stanford junior Jed Lowrie was 2-for-16, while Mark Romanczuk appeared in two games. Team USA (6-5) meets Danbury on Sunday night.
OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Palo Alto High students Max Rausch and Natty Stern qualified for the NorCal Golf Association Junior Championships during a tournament last week at Coyote Creek Golf Course in San Jose. Rausch shot a 6-over-par 78 and Stern checked in with an 80 to make the field for the Aug. 2-3 NorCal event at Lake Merced Golf Course in Daly City . . . Stanford grad Malindi Elmore will be the favorite in the women's 1,500 meters this weekend when the Canadian Olympic Track & Field Trials are held in Victoria, B.C. Elmore recently ran a career best of 4:02.64 while taking fourth in the Golden Gala in Rome, Italy. The time ranks her No. 1 in Canada this season and No. 4 all-time in the country. Elmore needs only to finish among the top four in her event to earn a trip to the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece . . . Atherton's Anjali Ranadive won the girls' 12 singles consolation title at the Tilly Botti Reno Junior Open at the Reno Municipal Tennis Center over the weekend by posting a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nastassia LeSure . . . Two Palo Alto residents reached the finals of their respective age groups at the Saratoga Junior Open last weekend before losing. In boys' 14 singles, Alexander Liu lost to Spencer Talmadge, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4, in the championship match. Liu reached the finals with a win over Emerson Lin in the semifinals. In boys' 12 singles, top-seeded Jamin Ball lost to No. 2 seed Andrew Malozsak, 6-2, 6-2, in the finals after beating Ian Clark, 6-1, 6-3, in the semifinals. The boys' 10 doubles team of Palo Alto's Andrew Ball and David Ball were awarded the title after their opponents were forced to withdraw due to illness. The Ball's reached the finals with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory in the semifinals.
NOTEWORTHY . . . Castilleja School is looking for coaches for the upcoming season in varsity cross country, JV water polo, JV tennis, varsity track and field in addition to an assistant coach for swimming. The 26th annual Los Gatos Summer All-Comer Track and Field meets will be held every Thursday evening through August 12 at Los Gatos High. The pole vault begins at 5 p.m., while the rest of the field events will commence at 5:30 and running events start at 6 p.m. There are five divisions: open, high school, women, masters, and kids under seven. There is a four dollar entry free and a two dollar charge for spectators.
