MAKING A SPLASH . . . The United States men's water polo team defeated Hungary, 11-9, on Monday at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach in a FINA World League contest. Stanford senior Tony Azevedo and Stanford grad Wolf Wigo each scored a goal for the Americans. "There were many positive indicators to come out of this game," USA coach Ratko Rudic said. "We now know what we are doing right and we know what we need to correct." Team USA dropped an 11-9 decision to Australia last Thursday in a shootout. Wigo scored twice, while Azevedo and Stanford grad Peter Hudnut each added a goal . . . Stanford grad Brenda Villa was named USA Today's Olympic Athlete of the Week after she led the U.S. women's water polo team to the FINA World League Super Finals championship. She scored 11 goals total, and turned a hat trick in each of the final three contests, including in the title game against Hungary . . . Two Stanford women's water polo club teams will participate in an eight-team tournament this weekend at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center. The tournament begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday. The Stanford A team plays at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., while the Stanford B team plays at 9 a.m., noon and 5 p.m.
MINOR LEAGUE ALL-STARS . . . A pair of former Stanford baseball stars finally get a chance to be teammates, if only for a day, as Brian Dallimore and John Gall were named to the Pacific Coast League all-star team, which will play the International League on Wednesday, July 14 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Dallimore, a 1996 Stanford grad, was batting .350 with two homers, 26 RBI and 43 runs scored for the San Francisco Giants affiliate in Fresno through Monday, while Gall, a 2000 grad, was hitting .323 with 20 homers, 64 RBI and 54 runs scored for the St. Louis Cardinals affiliate in Memphis. Dallimore made his major league debut with the Giants earlier this season.
NET RESULTS . . . Portola Valley resident Andrew Carlisle won the boys' 12 singles title at the Tilly Botti Reno Junior Open at the Reno Municipal Tennis Center over the weekend. Carlisle defeated Tyler Ramirez, 6-0, 6-0, in the finals. Atherton's Anjali Ranadive won the girls' 12 singles consolation title with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Nastassia LeSure . . . Two Palo Alto residents reached the finals of their respective age groups at the Saratoga Junior Open last weekend before losing. In boys' 14 singles, Alexander Liu lost to Spencer Talmadge, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4, in the championship match. Liu reached the finals with a win over Emerson Lin in the semifinals. In boys' 12 singles, top-seeded Jamin Ball lost to No. 2 seed Andrew Malozsak, 6-2, 6-2, in the finals after beating Ian Clark, 6-1, 6-3, in the semifinals. The boys' 10 doubles team of Palo Alto's Andrew Ball and David Ball were awarded the title after their opponents were forced to withdraw due to illness. The Ball's reached the finals with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory in the semifinals. Atherton's Michael Hoffman reached the consolation semifinals . . . Palo Alto resident Andrew Khuri-Yakub reached the quarterfinals of the Paradigm Summer Challenger at the Rollingswood Racquet Club in Fair Oaks.
OF LOCAL NOTE . . . The 26th annual Los Gatos Summer All-Comer Track and Field meets will be held every Thursday evening through August 12 at Los Gatos High. The pole vault begins at 5 p.m., while the rest of the field events will commence at 5:30 and running events start at 6 p.m. There are five divisions: open, high school, women, masters, and kids under seven. There is a four dollar entry free and a two dollar charge for spectators . . . The Union Football Club, a Palo Alto-based CYSA soccer program for girls U10-19, Class 1 and Class 3 levels, will hold tryouts in June. BANK OF THE WEST . . . Individual tickets for the Bank of the West Classic are on sale. The Classic, a WTA Tour Tier II event, will be held July 12-18 at the Taube Tennis Stadium on Stanford's campus. Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport lead the field of international competitors. Williams won the title in 2000 and 2002 and Davenport won in 1998 and 1999. Williams missed last year's tournament with a strained abdominal muscle. Tickets are priced between $10-$80 per session and are available through City Box Office at 1-415-392-4400 or through Tickets.com at (650) 478-2277. Day sessions Monday through Thursday begin at 10 a.m. and Friday and Saturday at 11 a.m. Evening sessions begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Saturday at 8 p.m. Sunday's final is scheduled for 1 p.m.
