Jennifer Yax and Courtney C. Patty,

The Allen Smith Quartet will perform tonight from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Stanford Shopping Center, in the gardens of the Clock Tower Plaza (near Neiman Marcus), as part of Summer Jazz 18. Trumpeter Smith and his quartet will bring a mix of standards and swing to the bandstand. The concert is co-sponsored by SFJAZZ. Admission is free. "Are We Almost There? will preview tonight at 8 p.m. at the Bus Barn Theatre, 97 Hillview Ave. in Los Altos. Presented by the Bus Barn Stage Company, the play features book, music and lyrics by Morris Bobrow. The show will officially open on Friday at 8 p.m. and run through Aug. 7. Show times are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays, July 18 and 25, at 3 p.m. Admission is $18 for tonight's preview; $30 for Friday's opening night and post-champagne reception; $25 for performances Thursdays through Saturdays; $20 for Sundays. "Arcadia" will be presented by TheatreWorks though July 11 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro St. (corner of Mercy). Written by Tom Stoppard, the play follows the eccentric inhabitants of a 19th-century estate and the pair of modern-day historians who probe their every move. Show times are Wednesday through Friday at 8 p.m.; Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m.; Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20-$50; discounts will be available for youth, students, seniors and members. "This American Life"
will be on display through July at the Pacific Art League, 668 Ramona St. in Palo Alto. See how artists interpret their thoughts of life in America. A reception will take place tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. At 7 p.m. Barbara Newton will present a program featuring artifacts and photographs about the Museum of American heritage and its founder, Frank Livermore, as well as information about the current exhibits, workshops and events. Her talk will be followed by Palo Alto historian Steve Staiger, who will give a short lecture and slide program on the history of Palo Alto's "American Life."

"Stuart Little" will be performed tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Cubberley Community Center Theatre, 4000 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto. Presented by Peninsula Youth Theatre, the show is a musical adaptation of E.B. White's classic mouse tale. Additional show times are 7:30 p.m. on Saturday; July 14-17; 2 p.m. July 10 and 17; and 4 p.m. July 11 and 18. Tickets are $14 for adults; $12 for kids 12 and under and seniors 62 and over. "Beauty and the Beast" will be presented tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Palo Alto Children's Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Road. Ron Stallings: A Context For Peace will take place tonight at 8 p.m. at Campbell Recital Hall, as part of the 2004 Stanford Jazz Festival. This evening of jazz and spoken word will showcase Stallings (on woodwinds) and a group of Bay Area musicians and poets who are dedicated to creating a vision, and a context, for peace. Tickets are $20 general; $18 students/seniors/Palo Alto Jazz Alliance members.

The 12th Annual Palo Alto Clay and Glass Festival

Junior Mance Trio will perform tonight at 8 p.m. at Campbell Recital Hall, as part of the 2004 Stanford Jazz Festival. "From Brazil: Palmo Quadrado & Indigenous Arts from the Amazon Basin"

This concert will showcase the Le Boeuf Brothers Quartet (featuring twin brothers Remy on saxophone and Pascal on piano) and the Yuma Sung Trio. "Gizmos & Gadgets," is currently on display at the Palo Alto Junior Museum & Zoo, 1451 Middlefield Road.
