Summer programs offered by school district Summer programs offered by school district (June 16, 2004)

For some of the area's school-aged youth, summer doesn't necessarily mean sleeping in until noon and heading to the beach with friends. Some local students want to take advantage of the unconventional summer course offerings not available during the regular school year, such as Fantasy Baseball 101 and introduction to fishing.

Summer school for all grade levels begins Monday, but there is still time to register.

Forms can either be picked up at the Palo Alto Unified School District Summer School Office at 25 Churchill Ave., or downloaded from the Internet at http://www.pausd.org/parents/programs/summ_school.shtml. The summer office can also be reached at 329-3769.

The Traditional Summer School program for students entering kindergarten through fifth-grade will be held at Duveneck Elementary School, 705 Alester Ave.

A Spanish Immersion Program for students currently enrolled in the immersion track or for fluent Spanish speakers entering first- through fifth-grades will also be held at Duveneck.

A Writing and Arts Enrichment Program for students entering the second- through fifth-grades will be held at Juana Briones Elementary School, 4100 Orme St.

A Math Intervention course for students entering second- through fifth-grades who have been identified by a teacher will also be held at Juana Briones.

A Literacy Intervention course for students entering first- through fifth grades and who have been identified by a teacher will be held at Walter Hays Elementary School, 1525 Middlefield Road.

Middle school summer programs

Students entering sixth- through eighth-grades have a plethora of classes to take during the summer. Courses will be held once or twice daily, from 8 to 10 a.m. and/or 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Jane Lathrop Stanford Middle School, 480 E. Meadow Drive.

The 37 different courses will all begin Monday and end July 16, with a holiday July 5.

Just some of the courses offered include papier-mâché, short stories, composition, beginning Japanese, Spanish, French and German, public speaking, learning strategies, cooking, algebra, math problem solving, jazz ensemble, choir, physics, biology, soccer, tennis, fishing, keyboarding, Web design and desktop publishing.

High school students also have a wide variety of options to choose from when it comes to summer school.

Some courses include art, photography, creative writing, SAT preparation, algebra, geometry, biology, economics, United States government and history, world history, Spanish, keyboarding and computer programming.
