CARDINAL CORNER . . . The top-ranked Stanford women's tennis team placed four of its team members on the ITA All-American team, including senior Lauren Barnikow, a four-time All-American. Junior Erin Burdette was named to the team for the third straight year and sophomore Amber Liu, who won back-to-back NCAA singles titles, earned her second such honor. Sophomore Alice Barnes was also named to the team . . . The Stanford men's tennis team placed two players on the ITA All-American team. The NCAA doubles champion Sam Warburg and KC Corkery were honored by the ITA . . . Stanford men's golf coach Jeff Mitchell announced his resignation to pursue other opportunities. In four years at Stanford, Mitchell led the Cardinal to a second-place finish in the Pac-10 in 2002, its best finish since winning the title in 1994 . . . The Stanford women's lightweight crew team concluded its season at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships in Cherry Hill, NJ. The Cardinal Varsity eight started with a second place finish in the heats. In the repechage, Stanford came in third, narrowly missing entry into the grand finals. And in the final race of the weekend, Stanford closed a gap of a boat length down on Purdue to only three seats with a move that started with 750 meters to go and extended to the finish line. "Although we lost a couple of close races, our ability to make moves and gain on other crews well into the second half of the race proved our determination and our endurance," said Stanford rower Kristina Peterson. "We're getting faster, and we aren't losing any seniors, so I'm looking forward to how speedy we're going to be next year." . . . The Stanford coed sailing team finished 10th out of 18 at the three-day ICSA North American Championship at Cascade Locks, Oregon "Although we don't have as many teams as other areas of the country, our teams are exceptionally strong," said Stanford coach Jay Kehoe. Hawaii won the team title . . . The Stanford men's crew completed its season with two appearances in the Grand Final at the 102nd IRA regatta. The Stanford freshman eight made their first ever appearance in the Grand Final as they raced to a fifth-place finish nearly eight seconds ahead of Princeton. The Stanford Open four raced to a fourth place overall finish. The Men's varsity eight finished fifth in the third final for an overall 17th place finish.

TIME TO SIGN UP . . . The Stanford Water Polo Club will begin a new 11-under program for girls beginning June 14. Practices are Monday through Thursday, 2:45-4 p.m. at Menlo College. The Union Football Club, a Palo Alto-based CYSA soccer program for girls U10-19, Class 1 and Class 3 levels, will hold tryouts in June. BANK OF THE WEST . . . Individual tickets for the Bank of the West Classic are now on sale. The Classic, a WTA Tour Tier II event, will be held July 12-18 at the Taube Tennis Stadium on Stanford's campus. Venus Williams, Kim Clijsters and Lindsay Davenport have all committed early to compete at Stanford. The trio represent the past six championships in event, with Clijsters the defending champion. She also won in 2001, while Williams won the title in 2000 and 2002 and Davenport won in 1998 and 1999. Williams missed last year's tournament with a strained abdominal muscle. Tickets are priced between $10-$80 per session and are available through City Box Office at 1-415-392-4400 or through Tickets.com at (650) 478-2277. Day sessions Monday through Thursday begin at 10 a.m. and Friday and Saturday at 11 a.m. Evening sessions begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Saturday at 8 p.m. Sunday's final is scheduled for 1 p.m.
