Putnam Putnam (June 09, 2004)is picked by the A's

Seven baseball players selected among first 10 rounds of the draft

by Rick Eymer

Stanford junior outfielder Danny Putnam was drafted by the Oakland Athletics with their compensation pick, the 36th player taken overall.

Junior catcher Donny Lucy was taken by the Chicago White Sox in the second round, the 59th player chosen overall.

Junior pitcher Mark Jecmen went to the Cleveland Indians in the seventh round, the 197th overall pick.

Senior pitcher David O'Hagan went to the San Diego Padres in the ninth round, the 252nd player selected, while senior outfielders Brian Hall and Sam Fuld went in the 10th round. Hall was tabbed by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays with the 297th pick overall and Fuld went to the Chicago Cubs with the 306th overall selection.

In the 11th round, senior infielder Jonny Ash was picked by the Houston Astros with the 334th selection in the draft. Fuld was drafted by the Cubs in the 23rd round last year, and he elected to return to Stanford for his senior season.

Long Beach State pitcher Jered Weaver was selected by the Anaheim Angels in the first round, the 11th pick overall, and the ninth pitcher chosen.

Putnam batted .378 with 16 home runs and 62 RBI for the Cardinal this season to earn all-Pac-10 honors for the second straight season.

Putnam, who became the 15th Cardinal in the last 18 years to be picked in the first round, was a career .345 hitter at Stanford, with 33 homers and 138 RBI.

Putnam led the team in hits (94), multiple-hit games (31), two-homer games (2) and triples (4).

He has three hits and drove in five runs in Stanford's 10-4 victory over UNLV in Friday's first-round NCAA Regional game.

Lucy hit .313 with 12 homers and 47 RBI, and is considered one of the top defensive catchers in the nation.

Lucy earned All-Pac-10 honors for the first time. His season included a career-high 15-game hit streak that tied with Putnam for the second longest run by a Cardinal player in 2004. Lucy started 56 of Stanford's 60 games at catcher.

He was Stanford's primary designated hitter as a sophomore while Ryan Garko manned the plate. Lucy played first base as a freshman, and has also appeared in the outfield during his Cardinal career.

Jecmen, a hard-throwing, was 1-0 with a 6.64 ERA in 16 games this season.
Men's basketball

Stanford junior All-American Josh Childress may be going pro, but he's already promised his mother he would complete his college work and earn a diploma.

Tuition probably won't be much of a problem for Childress, who officially declared for the NBA draft last week and hired an agent.

Once Childress put his name into the ring in April, it became clear he would turn pro after working out, and impressing, several teams.

"Teams have noticed that I'm fundamentally sound," said Childress. "I'll do the little things; I'm committed to winning. And I'm a good kid. I won't cause any headaches."

Childress averaged 15.7 points and 7.5 rebounds last season, and was named Pac-10 Player of the Year.
Track and field

Stanford will be represented by 26 athletes at the NCAA Track and Field championships, which get underway Wednesday at the University of Texas.

Grant Robison will be out to defend his 1,500 meter title, while Alicia Craig hopes to repeat in the 10,000 meters.

The Stanford men finished seventh last year while the Cardinal women were ninth.
