CARDINAL CORNER . . . Former Stanford tennis standout Jim Delaney will be among the four inductees of the ITA Men's Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame on May 26 during the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Delaney was a four-time ITA All-American for the Cardinal from 1972-75. He captured NCAA doubles titles in '73 and '74 (with Alex Mayer and John Whitlinger, respectively) and was a member of Coach Dick Gould's first (of 17) NCAA championship teams those same years. Delaney was the fourth player to ever earn ITA All-American honors four times and is one of 23 to ever do it. He resides in Arlington, Va. . . . Stanford senior Markus Rogan won a gold medal in the 200 IM (1:59.79) and earned a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke (55.27) at the European Swimming Championships in Madrid, Spain, while competing for his native country of Austria.

NEW GUNN COACH . . .
Gunn High has a new boys' basketball coach in Chris Redfield. In addition to teaching math the past two years at the school, Redfield has been an assistant in the boys' basketball program. He's a 1985 graduate of Princeton, where he played four years of varsity golf. The chance of having an on-campus basketball coach for the first time in more than six years made Redfield an easy choice. "This is another big plus for us," said Gunn Athletic Director Tom Jacoubowsky. "Chris' knowledge of our students and the access he will have to them, and they have to him, is going to make a good situation even better. We are excited about the possibilities Chris Redfield will bring to our program. His knowledge of basketball, his familiarity with our school and his contacts in the area will pay huge dividends." Redfield will take over a team that went 15-13 overall and 6-6 in the SCVAL De Anza Division last season, and featured Central Coast Section Freshman of the Year Peter Jordan.

A SOLID FINISH . . .
The Menlo Park-based SOLO 14-under boys' water polo team finished third out of 32 teams at the San Diego County Cup XI tournament last weekend. The SOLO team defeated Huntington Beach, 15-1; downed Long Beach Shores, 14-2; toppled Rose Bow, 14-5, and downed LA Water Polo Club, 12-2, before losing to SoCal, 9-2. SOLO then bounced back to beat San Diego in overtime, 6-5, for the bronze-medal finish. SOLO wound up with the best finish of any NorCal team entered. Team members are: Will Simon, Alex Popp, Greg Randall, Jake Mairs, Elliott Samuels, Matt Bogott, Andrew Child, Michael Bausback, Todd Daye, Richard Hong, Kevin Lane, Grant Villeneuve, Matt Garlock, Robert Dunlevie, Matt Parsons and Eric Macintosh. The team is coached by Ben Quittner.

OF LOCAL NOTE . . .
The Palo Alto Tomahawks posted a 16-11 win over Mendocino on Wednesday night in the NorCal Jr. Lacrosse League playoffs at St. Joseph's in Mountain View. The Tomahawks will play Saturday for the NorCal title, with a victory qualifying them for the state championships on May 23 in Santa Barbara.

TENNIS TICKETS . . . Individual tickets for the Bank of the West Classic are now on sale. The Classic, a WTA Tour Tier II event, will be held July 12-18 at the Taube Tennis Stadium on Stanford's campus. Venus Williams, Kim Clijsters and Lindsay Davenport have all committed early to compete at Stanford. The trio represent the past six championships in event, with Clijsters the defending champion. She also won in 2001, while Williams won the title in 2000 and 2002 and Davenport won in 1998 and 1999. Williams, who missed last year's tournament with a strained abdominal muscle, won the Family Circle Cup title on Sunday in Charleston, South Carolina. It was her first tournament win since February of 2003. "We are excited to be able to announce that Kim, Venus and Lindsay are coming back this year," said Tournament Director Gus Sampras. "We are expecting a great week of tennis." Tickets are priced between $10-$80 per session and are available through City Box Office at 1-415-392-4400 or through Tickets.com at (650) 478-2277.
