AND THE WINNER IS . . . Alexandra Dwight, 10, a fourth grader at Walter Hayes Elementary School in Palo Alto, is one of 30 winners statewide in a contest to write a letter to an author. She was one of 10 among 2,000 entrants who won in the fourth-through-sixth grade category in a contest sponsored by the group California Center for the Book. Her letter was written to author Pam Munoz Ryan, who had written "Esperanza Rising." The book, set in 1930, is about a Mexican girl who comes to California with her family. In her letter, Dwight wrote, "I loved this book because it has the warmth and sorrow of Esperanza and my lives."
ELECTION STRATEGIES . . . Carl Yorke of Palo Alto has updated "The Candidate's Handbook," written by his father, Harvey Yorke, 25 years ago. The book is a do-everything primer for running a campaign.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY . . . Kepler's Books in Menlo Park will celebrate its 49th anniversary this month with a party on the store's plaza. The event will be 2-4 p.m. Saturday, May 15. Numerous authors will be on hand, there will music and children's activities, food and raffle prizes.
AUTHOR, AUTHOR . . . Children's author Eric Cale will be Linden Tree children's bookstore in Los Altos at 9:30 a.m. May 14.
MORE AUTHOR, AUTHOR . . . Author events at Kepler's this month include Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Alice Walker at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Local writer Marilyn Yalom ("Birth of the Chess Queen") appears at 7:30 p.m. May 10.
