ON THE FIELD . . . Sophomore quarterback Trent Edwards was 20-of-25 for 270 yards and four touchdowns as the Cardinal defeated the White, 35-0, in Stanford's annual spring football game on Saturday. Edwards threw TD passes to J.R. Lemon, Mark Bradford, Alex Smith and Justin McCullum as the offense totaled 343 passing yards. "We had a very productive spring," said Stanford coach Buddy Teevens. "There were many positives to point towards. I thought we threw the ball well today and that Trent showed great progress." Bradford, Stanford's leading returning receiver, had six catches for 82 yards, including a 12-yard scoring pass from Edwards. Defensively, Bryan Bentrott led the team with nine tackles.
IN THE DRAFT . . . Stanford linemen were in demand on the second day of the NFL draft as defensive lineman Amon Gordon was selected in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns. The Browns also picked Cardinal offensive lineman Kirk Chambers in the sixth round while offensive lineman Drew Caylor went to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the sixth round.
IN THE POOL . . . At least one Loyola Marymount women's water polo player will find some familiar faces in the crowd when the No. 6 Lions play in the NCAA tournament at Stanford beginning May 6. Portola Valley resident and St. Francis High grad Katie Murray celebrated her 20th birthday by recording eight saves in the goal as Loyola Marymount defeated UC San Diego, 7-3, in the championship game of the WWPA tournament on Sunday in Los Angeles. The Lions are making their fourth- straight appearance in the NCAA tournament. Murray, a sophomore at LMU, played in the field as a freshman, recording five goals while playing in 11 games.
TENNIS TICKETS . . . Individual tickets for the Bank of the West Classic went on sale on Monday. The Classic, a WTA Tour Tier II event, will be held July 12-18 at the Taube Tennis Stadium on Stanford's campus. Venus Williams, Kim Clijsters and Lindsay Davenport have all committed early to compete at Stanford. The trio represent the past six championships in event, with Clijsters the defending champion. She also won in 2001, while Williams won the title in 2000 and 2002 and Davenport won in 1998 and 1999. Williams, who missed last year's tournament with a strained abdominal muscle, won the Family Circle Cup title on Sunday in Charleston, South Carolina. It was her first tournament win since February of 2003. "We are excited to be able to announce that Kim, Venus and Lindsay are coming back this year," said Tournament Director Gus Sampras. "We are expecting a great week of tennis." Tickets are priced between $10-$80 per session and are available through City Box Office at 1-415-392-4400 or through Tickets.com at (650) 478-2277. Day sessions Monday through Thursday begin at 10 a.m. and Friday and Saturday at 11 a.m. Evening sessions begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Saturday at 8 p.m. Sunday's final is scheduled for 1 p.m.
