CARDINAL CORNER . . . Sophomore left-handed pitcher Mark Romanczuk earned Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors after pitching seven scoreless innings in Stanford's 10-2 victory over USC last Friday. He struck out seven and allowed seven hits. Romanczuk (4-1) has a 3.31 ERA, and team-highs in both strikeouts (36) and innings pitched (35 1/3). Romanczuk has won three of his last four starts with one no-decision . . . The women's gymnastics team jumped to No. 3 in the nation after last week's impressive win at Maryland. It's the Cardinal's highest team ranking in program history. Over the past three weeks, Stanford has risen from No. 9 to its current ranking . . . Women's volleyball player Sara McGee was one of 29 female athletes who participated in fall sports to receive an NCAA postgraduate scholarship of $7,500 . . . Gunn High grad Ashlee Rosenthal and Castilleja grad Sara Bowling are among the top Stanford divers at the NCAA Zone E meet, which began Thursday and continues through Saturday in Oklahoma City. The divers will be trying to qualify for the NCAA swimming and diving championships in College Station, Texas beginning March 18. Cassidy Krug and Erin Lashnits are also scheduled to compete for the Cardinal.
STANFORD ON TV . . . KRON, Channel 4 in San Francisco, will tape record a 30-minute show on Monday from 7-7:45 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion regarding the nationally-ranked Cardinal men's basketball team. The show will honor the Pac-10 champions, who have chalked up a 26-1 record, and a No. 2 national ranking. Stanford students and the Palo Alto community are encouraged to be
a part of the studio audience at Burnham Pavilion for this broadcast, which will be aired later that evening (10-10:30 p.m.) on KRON (4). Students are encouraged to be at Burnham Pavilion around 6:30 p.m. to insure themselves good seats. Several members of the Stanford basketball team will be in attendance along with the Stanford Band.
FITNESS WEEKEND . . . The Paul Spangler Memorial 8K run (and 5K racewalk) will be held Sunday at Stanford. The run is open to men and women age 50 as part of the Fitness Over 50 Fitness Weekend. The racewalk is open to all ages and begins at 8:30 a.m. at Stanford Stadium. The Fitness Walk starts at 8:45 a.m. while the run starts at 9 a.m. Race-day registration is $25. The 50-Plus Fitness Weekend also includes a health conference and awards dinner on Saturday and a health fair following race events. ON THE MAT: Stanford will be represented by five wrestlers at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis beginning March 18. The Cardinal contingent includes Tanner Gardner (125), Paul Gross (133), Brad Metzler (141), Matt Gentry (157), and Imad Kharbush (174). Last year, only Gentry was selected to compete at the NCAA tournament. Gentry figures to compete for the national title, as he went 4-2 and was an All-America Honorable Mention last year. This year, Gentry has vaulted into the national spotlight with an undefeated season and a No. 2 ranking in the nation. He has a 37-0 record with six falls and is Pac-10 champion at 157 pounds.
