MENLO CORNER . . . With James Guizar winning his second national championship, the Menlo College men's wrestling team finished second at the NAIA National Championships in Great Falls, Mont. Guizar won his individual title at 141 pounds helping the Oaks' attain their highest national finish ever in only their third year of competition. Menlo was fourth last season and eighth the year before. "It was exciting to place second with all the hard work the guys have put in, especially for the seniors, as they put it together in the end," Menlo coach Keith Spataro said. "We had a great tournament and wrestled well." In addition to Guizar, who won his division with a 7-2 decision, Menlo's other All-Americans were Danny Castillo at 149 and Eddie Lucatero at 165. Castillo fell in his championship match, 11-9, while Lucatero finished seventh. Menlo also had seven others receive honorable mention All-American status: Ricky Aguirre (125), Cleo Johnson (125), Artem Krylov (157), Jesse Vasquez (184), Marcus Andy (197) and Ken Pamanian (heavyweight) . . . The Menlo baseball team will continue its current homestand by hosting Pacific University in a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon. The teams will meet again Sunday at noon.

PREP ROUNDUP . . . The spring swim season gets under way next week with Sacred Heart Prep playing host to Menlo-Atherton and Palo Alto on Monday at 3 p.m. The tri-meet features three of the top teams from their respective leagues. The host Gators defeated the Bears last season but will be facing Palo Alto for the first time. The Sacred Heart Prep boys are expected to field perhaps their strongest team in school history . . . The Menlo-Atherton track and field team will open its season Saturday in the annual PAL Relays at Sequoia High. Events begin at 9 a.m. . . . The Palo Alto baseball team is off to a good start this season following a 6-4 win over Menlo in the third round of the Peninsula Classic. Paly seniors Shane Parsons and Max Pinto each hit homers to help starter Jeremy Gillan pick up his second pitching win of the season. Gunn also improved to 2-1 with a 9-8 tourney win over Sequoia. Colin Felch had three hits for the Titans while teammate Nathan Urbassik drove in three runs . . . Emily Forman picked up the pitching win and Kelly Fangonillo drove in two runs to help the Palo Alto softball team edge visiting Menlo-Atherton, 8-7, Tuesday.

CARDINAL CORNER . . . The Stanford varsity sailors host the annual Jeremy McIntyre Team Race Regatta this weekend. Included in the field is No. 2-ranked Hawaii and No. 4 USC. Named for former team captain Jeremy McIntyre (1994), who was killed in an avalanche while skiing, the McIntyre regatta is the highest-profile team race event on the West Coast. Ten schools earned berths to compete at this year's regatta. Races will be held in the Port of Redwood City turning basin, and can be easily viewed from Stanford's Morrison Boathouse or the surrounding shoreline. Saturday's elimination rounds will be sailed from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and continue on Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon will feature the final four in the afternoon, with awards at 4 p.m. The Team Race format pits three boats from one team against three boats from another team. Each team uses boathandling, rules and strategy to defeat their opponent with better finishes. Colored sails are used to distinguish one team from another.
SOCCER NEWS . . . The Union Football Club is a recently formed CYSA club located in Palo Alto and will be holding tryouts. The MVLA CyberRays, a CYSA Under-12 girls' Class 3 (born after 7/31/91) is looking for several fast, skilled and dedicated players to help the team move up to the next level.
