PREP ROUNDUP . . . The Palo Alto High boys' tennis team did a good job dodging raindrops this week while opening the season with two nonleague victories. On Monday, the Vikings disposed of visiting Serra, 7-0. On Tuesday, Paly knocked off visiting Mills, 6-1. Justin Shoolery, Danny Snyder, and Adam Lischinsky swept their singles matches in straight sets as the Vikings won 13 of 14 matches in that fashion . . . Menlo-Atherton evened its baseball record at 1-1 with a 7-6 extra-inning victory over Hillsdale on Tuesday at Flood Park. The Bears scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth when sophomore Tyler Finley doubled home JT Power, who was on base after being hit by a pitch. In the top of the inning,Alec Roth threw out two runners from right field to halt a rally by Hillsdale. Roth had three hits and two RBI while David Klein had two hits and two RBI for the Bears, scheduled to visit Mountain View on Saturday at 3 p.m. Palo Alto opened its baseball season Monday with an 11-0 romp over host Woodside in the first round of the Peninsula Tournament. Junior Matt Wismann led Paly with two hits and three RBI to help secure the pitching win for Jeremy Gillan.
MENLO NOTES . . . Menlo College senior Mike Watters was named to the California Pacific All-Conference men's basketball team this week. Watters led the conference in scoring, averaging nearly 25 points a game. He went into last night's first-round conference playoff game against Dominican only 12 points shy of becoming just the fifth player in Menlo history to score 1,000 career points.
SOCCER NEWS . . . The Union Football Club is a recently formed CYSA club located in Palo Alto and will be holding tryouts. For information, visit the website at www.unionfootballclub.com or call 387-4128 . . . The Stanford Vortex Under-14 boys' team is holding tryouts for the spring and fall seasons. Information: 321-5944 or www.stanfordsoccerclub.org . . . The Mountain View/Los Altos Menance, an Under-15 girls' Class I CYSA team, is holding tryouts to find a few more strong players. Tryouts will be Tuesday and Thursday evenings in Mountain View. Interested experienced players July 1988 should contact manager Chris Tucker at 948-5258 . . . The MVLA CyberRays, a CYSA Under-12 girls' Class 3 (born after 7/31/91) is looking for several fast, skilled and dedicated players to help the team move up to the next level.
