MENLO CORNER . . . The Menlo College women's basketball won twice over the weekend, beating Simpson College, 73-59, in their regular-season finale on Saturday, a day after beating visiting Notre Dame du Namur, 56-39. Against Simpson, Nadia Clark scored 18 points in the second half. For the game, she shot 10-of-11 from the floor for a career-high with 24 points. Junior guard Maria Gomez added 12 points, seven assists and four steals. Menlo (13-12, 9-7) will participate in the California Pacific Conference tournament, which begins Thursday. Nicole Johnson had a season high 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting in the win over Notre Dame. Ki'i Spencer-Vasconcellos added 14 points . . . The Menlo men's basketball team lost, 82-65, to Notre Dame du Namur on Friday night. The Oaks received another fine offensive night from senior Mike Watters. The San Francisco native had 28 points while freshman guard Tim Coyne added another 16. Menlo (4-21, 4-14) advances to the California Pacific Conference tournament . . . The Menlo baseball team swept a doubleheader from Bethany on Saturday, 19-3 and 12-0. Centerfielder Alex Alcaraz was 5-for-5 at the plate with a pair of doubles and a career-high four RBI. In the second game, Matt Gagliardi homered on the second pitch of the game. Derek Kinzler and Scott Serizawa also each hit homers . . . The Menlo softball team dropped a pair to Cal State Hayward on Saturday, 9-1 and 7-5. In the second game, 10 Oaks came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lauren Baker, Melissa Hara, and Megan Giffin each had run scoring singles before falling short. Menlo College (2-4) hosts a three-day tournament beginning Thursday.
OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Former Sacred Heart Prep standout Haley Woods, now a sophomore catcher with the California softball team, was named USA Softball Player of the Week on Friday (Feb. 20) after leading the Bears to a UNLV Tournament sweep last week. Woods hit .600 (9-15) over the five-game stretch including four home runs and 17 RBI. "Haley just had a tremendous performance at the plate last week," said Cal coach Diane Ninemire. "She was just seeing the ball really well. Our team has done a good job of setting the table for her." On the season, Woods is now batting .353 (12-34) with a team leading four home runs and 18 RBI.
