The Stanford Department of Drama
will present the US premiere production of Isaac Babel's "Maria" tonight at 8 p.m. at Stanford's Pigott Theater, located in Memorial Auditorium. Additional show times are Friday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m. Tickets are $12 general; $10 Stanford faculty and staff; $8 students. Avenidas will celebrate the official opening of its Fire House Gallery tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibition will feature paintings, sculpture, fiber art and other works by senior artists and craftspersons. "The Pied Piper," based on the poem "The Pied Piper of Hamlin," and dramatized by Melvin Bernhardt, will open tonight at 7:30 p.m. at El Carmelo School, 3024 Bryant St. in Palo Alto. Additional show times will be Friday at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The play is the third in the Palo Alto Children's Theatre outreach season. Tickets are $6 adults; $3 for children and can be ordered by phone at (650) 463-4970 through the Children's Theatre Box Office, Tuesdays through Saturdays 1:30 to 6 p.m. They may also be purchased in person.

"Candide" will be presented by Foothill Music Theatre tonight at 8 p.m. at Foothill College's Playhouse, 12345 El Monte Road in Los Altos Hills. The play, featuring a score by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler, follows the globe-trotting adventures of a displaced lad separated from his one true love. Show times are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m.; Saturday, March 13 at 2 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. "Candide" will run through March 14. The Takacs Quartet

Mixed-media painter Robert Haemmerling and computer artist Jeehee Lee will have their works exhibited through March 25 at Stanford Art Spaces, located on campus at the Paul Allen Center for Integrated Systems. The Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra

Palo Alto Philharmonic will present "A Tribute to Great Russian Composers" tonight at 8 p.m. at Cubberley Theatre, 4000 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto. The concert will showcase acclaimed pianist Rueibin Chen, who will perform Rachmaninoff's "Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor." Camilla Kolchinsky will be the guest conduct for this piece. The program will also include the "Lieutenant Kijé Suite" by Prokofiev and the "Swan Lake Suite" by Tchaikovsky, both of which will be conducted by Assistant Conductor Lee Actor. "Gizmos & Gadgets," is currently on display at the Palo Alto Junior Museum & Zoo, 1451 Middlefield Road. "Picasso to Thiebaud:Modern Contemporary Art from the Collections of Stanford University Alumni and Friends" will be on display through June 20 at the Iris & B. The exhibition will feature more than 70 prints, drawings and photographs from the early 17th century to the present, featuring artists as subjects. Peninsula Symphony
