Around town Around town (February 25, 2004)

POOR POOR RADIO ANNOUNCER ... It was a long, long, long City Council meeting for KZSU (90.1) broadcaster Vince Larkin last Tuesday night. In the middle of the meeting, the city went behind closed doors for a private discussion that lasted nearly an hour. The announcer put on his game face and began filling the empty airtime. Those who kept listening heard Larkin's thoughts on the Democratic primaries, among other newsy topics, and he did a nearly spot-on Sen. John Edwards impersonation. We also heard him riff on Wimbledon, wishing he could replay highlights from classic council meetings of yore, like they do during the tennis tournament's rain delays.
DRIVING AND DRINKING (STARBUCKS) ... The clubhouse near Palo Alto's golf course has gotten a major remodel and a new name: The Bay Café and Deli. In addition to the lavisher décor, there are also new menu items, including Starbucks coffee and deli meats. So now you can go from tee time to Frappuccino time at Palo Alto's links.
CITY SCHOOL LIASON ... If you've been wondering why there's been no meetings of the city/school liaison committee this year, wonder no further. The city's attorneys were busy figuring out if Councilwoman Hillary Freeman 's work as a substitute teacher in the Palo Alto school district constituted a conflict of interest that is too strong for her to serve on the committee. Turns out it does, and Councilman Jim Burch has been picked as her replacement. The committee will be meeting Wednesday morning, Feb. 25, at 8 a.m. The meeting will be held at the City Council Conference Room, at 250 Hamilton Ave. Athletic fields and school safety will be among the topics discussed.
