OAKS CORNER . . . The Menlo College men's wrestling retained its No. 5 national ranking in the NAIA after winning the West Regional last weekend. Montana State Northern is the top-ranked team heading into the NAIA national championships next Friday in Great Falls, Montana. Individually, Menlo's 141-pounder James Guizar is ranked No. 1 in his weight class. At 125 pounds, Cleo Johnson is ranked fifth, while Ricky Aguirre is eighth. At 149 pounds, Danny Castillo is ranked fifth, Eddie Lucatero is seventh and Kyle Bickford is eighth. Marcus Andy is ranked seventh at 197 pounds . . . The Menlo College men's basketball team dropped a 74-69 California Pacific Conference contest to host Cal Maritime on Tuesday night despite attempting 37 3-pointers (and making 12 of them). Trevor Mates was 6-of-20 from long range and scored 22 points for the game while Mike Watters added 26 points. The Oaks (4-13, 4-20) host Notre Dame du Namur on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the regular season finale. The Cal Pac tournament opens next weekend.
HOOP CHAMPS . . . Jordan Middle School won the 40th annual Palo Alto Boys 8th Grade Basketball Tournament last weekend at Cubberley Community Center with a 38-35 victory over Hillview A of Menlo Park. The 16-team tournament was sponsored by the Atherton Lions Club and hosted by City of Palo Alto Recreation. Jordan Jefferson of Jordan was named first team all-tournament along with Mickey Fogel of Hillview. Mike Scott of JLS made the second team. Jordan defeated Taylor, 46-40; got by Burlingame, 38-31; and advanced to the finals when Fisher School forfeited in the semifinals. Hillview crushed Sierramont, 76-57; outscored Bowditch, 50-34, and romped by JLS, 71-46 to reach the finals. Jordan's tourney title came on the heels of a third-straight undefeated middle school regular season. Jordan was led by Jeff Fuller, Khalin Sandifere, Jordan Jordan, Tyger Pederson, Stevie Medearis, Brandon Boyd, Brian Karvelas, Brook Seaman, Connor Baskauskas, Michael Martin, Thomas Price and Peter Vericat. Jane Lathrop Stanford Middle School (JLS) won the Art David Athletic League 7th grade A boys' basketball playoffs recently with a 49-34 win over Borel of San Mateo. It was a repeat title for JLS, which won the title last year as sixth-graders. The team went 25-0 over two seasons. Team members included Kyle Perricone, Ryan Miller, Zachary Blumenfeld, Stephan Castro, Zach Harris, Sean Hodson, Nick Holodniy, Aaron Johnson, Max Minowitz, Patrick Osagiede, Nick Robinson and Morayo Sonuga.
SOCCER NEWS . . . The Union Football Club is a recently formed CYSA club located in Palo Alto and will be holding tryouts.
