CANCER PIONEER HONORED . . . Dr. M. Ellen Mahoney, a co-founder of the 10-year-old Community Breast Health Project in Palo Alto, was honored as a "local legend" last Friday by the American Women's Medical Association. Mahoney is currently a practicing breast surgeon in Arcata, Calif., but previously was on the clinical faculty of the department of surgery at Stanford University. Her work has furthered the knowledge of breast-cancer literature and of the problems faced by patients and families. Congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo and congressman Mike Thompson nominated her for the honor. For information about the Community Breast Health Project http://www.cbhp.org/
NATURAL SKIN CARE . . . What role do antioxidants, vitamins, supplements and the like do for skin care? Dr. Mary Lynn Moran will discuss natural remedies for warding off premature aging in her lecture on "Ageless Beauty" on Wednesday, Feb.25, from 11 a.m. to noon at Vivre Fitness and Wellness, 611 Emerson St. The seminar is free for Vivre members and $10 for non-members. For information, call 328-2820.
REDUCING HARM . . . Twelve-step programs may not be for everyone who has abuses substances, authors of a new book on "harm reduction" contend. Fewer than 25 percent of those who try the 12-step method stay abstinent from their addiction in the long run, according to Adina Glickman, the assistant director for peer and academic support at Stanford University; and Patt Denning and Jeannie Little, who run the Harm Reduction Therapy Center in San Francisco. The harm-reduction method is an alternative that involves taking small steps, getting positive feedback and cutting back, if quitting completely is impossible. The authors will be appearing at Stanford Bookstore on Friday, March 5 at noon to promote their new book, "Over the Influence: The Harm Reduction Guide for Managing Drugs & Alcohol." Visit www.stanfordbookstore.com for more information.
