CARDINAL CORNER . . . The Stanford men's tennis team will get its first look at some of the top collegiate teams when it heads to the National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle on Thursday. Count the fifth-ranked Cardinal among the elite. Stanford (2-0) won five of six singles matches on Tuesday to defeat visiting Hawaii, 5-1, at the Taube Tennis Center. The doubles were not contested because of weather conditions. Menlo School grad James Pade, playing at No. 3 singles, beat Bryon Weinberg, 6-1, 6-0, to help set the tone for the Cardinal . . . Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette, combined for a victory at No. 1 doubles to help spark the Stanford women's tennis team to a 7-0 victory over visiting TCU on Monday . . . It doesn't get any easier for the Stanford women's gymnastics team when it hosts Washington tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion. The seventh-ranked Cardinal (1-1 in the Pac-10, 4-1 overall) are coming off an upset victory over No. 6 Arizona last week, but must now contend with the 10th-ranked Huskies (1-1, 5-1), who beat Stanford last year in Seattle . . . The No. 8 Stanford men's volleyball team hopes to get back on the winning track when it hosts fifth-ranked UC Santa Barbara today at 7 p.m. in Maples Pavilion. Stanford (2-2 in the MPSF, 4-4 overall) hosts Cal State Northridge on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion . . . Stanford wrestler Matt Gentry will compete at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic on Monday. Gentry, currently undefeated and ranked fourth in the nation at 157 pounds, is the first Cardinal wrestler invited to the event. He will face Ohio University's Jake Percival, who is also undefeated and is ranked third in the nation.
OAKS CORNER . . . The Menlo College men's basketball team won its second straight contest, beating host Simpson College, 70-65, on Tuesday as Mike Watters scored 25 points on 11-of-18 shooting. Tim Coyne added a career-high 16 points for the Oaks. Menlo (3-6 in the Cal Pac Conference, 3-13 overall) host Dominican today at 7:30 p.m. . . . The Menlo College women's basketball team beat host Simpson, 57-42, as Nicole Johnson scored a season-high 15 points while Ki'i Spencer-Vasconcellos added 16 points. Keisha Thomas grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds to go with nine points. The Lady Oaks (4-3, 8-8) host Dominican today at 5:30 p.m.
LOCAL SOCCER NEWS . . . The Stanford Firebolts' Under-14 girls' Class 3 CYSA team will hold tryouts Saturday, Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. at Greer Park Field No. 5. Information: 424-0416 . . . The Stanford JV, an Under-12 boys' Class I team that plays in the Ambronzino League, will hold tryouts this Saturday at Mitchell Park. The team is coached by European pro Chris Sullivan. The Palo Alto CYSA Soccer Club will be conducting tryouts for the upcoming season for boys and girls between the ages of 10-14 at the Cubberley fields. The Under-10 and Under-12 boys' and girls' teams will conduct tryouts on Sunday, Feb. 1 and Saturday, Feb. 7. SOFTBALL SIGNUPS . . . The final day for walk-in registration for the 2004 Palo Alto Girls' Softball league season will be Saturday, Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. to noon in Room H-1 at the Cubberley Community Center. Players ages 5-15 also can register online at www.paloaltogirlssoftball.org. The league, affiliated with the Amateur Softball Association (ASA), serves players from Palo Alto, Menlo Park, East Palo Alto and Los Altos Hills. The spring season begins in March and runs through June.
COACHES NEEDED . . . Woodside Priory is looking for baseball, golf plus track and field coaches for the spring season.
