TheatreWorks
will present "Memphis" tonight and tomorrow at 8 p.m. in a preview performance at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro St. Written by playwright Joe DiPietro and Bon Jovi composer-keyboardist David Bryan, the play chronicles the birth of rock 'n' roll while profiling a deejay who played the music of black and white America together for the first time. "Memphis" will officially open on Saturday at 8 p.m. Show times are Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m.; Wednesdays through Fridays at 8 p.m.; Saturdays at 2 and 8 p.m., (8 p.m. only Jan. 24 and Feb. 14); Sundays at 2 and 7 p.m. on Jan. 25 and Feb. 1; 2 p.m. only on Feb. 8 and 15. "Visual Voice" audio-described performances will be available Feb. 13-14 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20-$48; discounts are available for youth, students, seniors and members. The Chapman University Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, under the direction of William Hall, will perform on tonight at 7 p.m. at Gunn's Spangenberg Theatre, 780 Aratradero Road in Palo Alto. "The Winter's Tale" will be presented tonight at 8 p.m. at the Bus Barn Theatre, 97 Hillview Ave. in Los Altos. One of Shakespeare's last works, the play is a profound explanation of the simple miracles in life and the forces that shape them -- love, friendship, jealousy and forgiveness. Show times are 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, 3 p.m. on Feb. 1 and Feb. 8. A discussion will take place on Jan. 30. Tickets are $25 for Thursdays through Saturdays; $20 for Sundays. "Born Yesterday,"
Garson Kanin's classic comedy, will be presented tonight at 8 p.m. at the Lucie Stern Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto. Presented by the Palo Alto Players, the production will run through Feb. 1. Regular show times are 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1. Ticket prices are $21 for Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday performances; $25 for Friday and Saturday evenings. "The Artist Observed: Portraits and Self-Portraits" will be on display Jan. 14 through May 2 at the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University.
