Stanford loses soccer star
(January 21, 2004) Sophomore Marshall leaves early for the MLS
by Rick Eymer
Stanford sophomore Chad Marshall, who will forego his final two years of college eligibility, was drafted by the Columbus Crew with the second overall pick in the Major League Soccer Superdraft.
Stanford senior Mike Wilson was taken by the San Jose Earthquakes in the third round.
Marshall, who joins Stanford grad Simon Elliott on the Crew, was selected immediately as the No. 2 pick overall after 14-year old phenom Freddy Adu, who was drafted by D.C. United.
Wilson joins former former Stanford standouts Todd Dunivant and Roger Levesque on the Earthquakes' roster.
Marshall was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Far West Region second team member, and earned first team All-Pac-10 honors this past season.
Wilson was also an All-Pac-10 pick this past season, named to the second team. In his four seasons on The Farm, Wilson helped the Cardinal to a 58-25-6 record (.685), a Pac-10 championship and a national runnerup finish.
