OPEN SESAME . . . Even though it opened at its permanent home this fall, Terman Middle School will hold an opening ceremony on Friday, Feb. 13. The event includes campus tours and a reception from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., followed by an opening ceremony from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Stop by 650 Arastradero Road to check it out.
SUMMER FUN . . . It's still chilly out, but summer isn't far off. Stop by the summer opportunities fair at Menlo School , 50 Valparaiso Ave. in Atherton on Feb. 8 to learn about cool programs for high school students. The fair runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
GIVING PROPS . . . At the Jan. 13 Palo Alto Unified School District school board meeting, board President Cathy Kroymann announced January is National School Board Recognition month . "So thank you, all of you, for your willingness to work on the school board," she said to fellow board members Gail Price, Mandy Lowell, John Barton and Camille Townsend.
SOMETHING TO CHIRP ABOUT . . . Ten-year-old Palo Altan Sophie Christel won second prize in children's magazine Cricket's October 2003 Cricket League art competition. Christel's drawing, which depicts a cowboy riding a bucking horse in the desert, ran in the January edition of Cricket. The contest's topic was "The Wild West." Another local, 13-year-old Jeanine Kosinski of Mountain View, was awarded an honorable mention in the same competition.
TALK FOR THE ANIMALS . . . Want to help give animals a voice? If you're a high school student, you can enter the Humane Education Network's fourteenth-annual "A Voice For Animals" essay contest. Entrants must write an essay on inhumane treatment of an animal in the United States and discuss why it concerns the writer, why it should stop and how people can ensure a good future for animals. First prize is $500, second prize is $250 and third prize is $100. The deadline is March 4, 2004. For more information call (650) 854-8921 or e-mail the Humane Education Network at HENnet2@aol.com.
