OAKS' CORNER . . . The Menlo College women's wrestling team finished second in its own Lady Oaks Wrestling Open on Saturday, and Sara Fulp-Allen was named the Open's Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning in the 48 kilos weight class. Fulp-Allen recorded a technical fall in the second round. Caylene Valdez won the 55 kilos weight class after recording a pair of pins. Sheila Lerit, in 55 kilos, and Misty Stalling, in the heavyweight division, both finish second . . . The Menlo College women's basketball team opened California Pacific Conference play with a pair of home victories, beating CSU Monterey Bay, 84-59, on Thursday and Bethany College, 84-53, on Saturday. Ki'i Spencer-Vasconcellos scored 23 points and had seven assists in the win over Monterey Bay. Nadia Clark added 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting and Keisha Thomas had 14 points. Spencer-Vasconcellos added 18 points in the win over Bethany. Lauren Gordon scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Menlo (2-0, 6-5) puts its four-game winning streak on the line when it travels to Cal State Hayward for a 5:30 p.m. game on Tuesday . . .The Menlo College men's wrestling team won twice at the Dickinson Duals on Friday, beating University of St. Mary's, 35-12, and Dickinson, 25-11. At the Dickinson Open, the Oaks finished third while Cleo Johnson (125 pounds) and James Guizar (141) each won individual titles. Menlo (2-0, 5-4) competes at the UC Davis Aggie Open on Saturday . . . The Menlo College men's basketball team dropped a pair of home games in Cal Pac Conference play over the weekend, 85-57 to Cal State Monterey Bay in Thursday, and 61-56 to Bethany College on Saturday. Mike Watters (20 points) and Trevor Mates (16) combined to shoot 12-of-25 from the field while the rest of the Oaks were 7-of-30 against the Otters. Kyle Arneson scored 18 points in the loss to Bethany. Menlo (1-2, 1-9) travels to Cal State Hayward for a 7:30 p.m. game on Tuesday.

The Stanford Tornados, a new Under-10 girls' CYSA Class 3 team, will hold tryouts Wednesday from 2-4 p.m., at Greer Park, Field 5. For more information: 856-4744 . . . The Stanford Earthquakes CYSA Under-14 boys' Class 3 team will hold a tryout at Greer Park (Field 5) on Sunday, Jan. 18. For more information: 858-2076 . . . The Stanford JV, an Under-12 boys' Class I team that plays in the Ambronzino League, will hold tryouts Jan. 24 and 31 at Mitchell Park. The team is coached by European pro Chris Sullivan. For more information: 269-4971 . . . The Palo Alto CYSA Soccer Club will be conducting tryouts for the upcoming season for boys and girls between the ages of 10-14 at the Cubberley fields. The Under-10 and Under-12 boys' and girls' teams will conduct tryouts on Saturday, Jan. 24, Sunday, Feb. 1 and Saturday, Feb. 7. SOFTBALL SIGNUPS . . . The second day for walk-in registration for the 2004 Palo Alto Girls' Softball league season will be Wednesday, Jan. 21 from 7-9 p.m. in Room H-1 at the Cubberley Community Center. The final signup session at Cubberley will be Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. to noon. Players ages 5-15 also can register online at www.paloaltogirlssoftball.org. The league, affiliated with the Amateur Softball Association (ASA), serves players from Palo Alto, Menlo Park, East Palo Alto and Los Altos Hills. The spring season begins in March and runs through June.
