Nationally No. 6-ranked Stanford gymnastics squad sweeps opening quadrangular meet in impressive style

by Rick Eymer

Stanford senior swimmers Markus Rogan and Peter Marshall both have plenty of experience in short-course meter races, which will be used at the NCAA swimming championships this year.

Their early results have been positive. Rogan and Marshall each won two events as the third-ranked Cardinal defeated No. 6 Michigan in Ann Arbor, 215 1/2-191 1/2, in a two-day meet over the weekend.

The victory again establishes Stanford as one of the favorites to win an NCAA championship.

Rogan, who competed in the 2000 Olympics for Austria in addition to swimming in the Short Course World Championships, won the 200 IM in 1:59.12 and the 200 back in 1:55.17.

Marshall, who participated in the Short Course World Championships, won the 100 back in 52.21, and the 100 free in 49.41.

Jayme Cramer, Thomas Brown, Ben Wildman-Tobriner and Adam Peterson also won events for Stanford, which hosts Pacific on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Cardinal outscored the Wolverines, 139-104, on the second day to rally for the win. Michigan held an 11-point advantage after the first day, but that lead vanished on the first event of the second day as Stanford finished 1-2 in the 400 medley relay. The relay team of Marshall, Keenan Newman, Cramer and Wildman-Tobriner won the event in 3:41.45.
Women's swimming

Tara Kirk, Kristen Caverly and Morgan Hentzen each won two events as fourth-ranked Stanford defeated visiting Pacific, 144-107, on Saturday.

Dana Kirk was also an individual winner for the Cardinal. Stanford's 200-meter medley relay squad of Megan Baumgartner, Tara Kirk, Dana Kirk and Sarah Jones also won.

"I thought it was good meet overall for us, and we had some excellent swims from several individuals," said Stanford coach Richard Quick. "But I know that we have some work to do during the next two weeks."

Stanford (2-0) hosts Arizona State in its Pac-10 opener on Friday, Jan. 23.

The Cardinal extended their dual-meet winning streak to six meets, and 23 of 25 overall.

Tara Kirk remained unbeaten in the 100 breast during her collegiate career, winning her 29th straight race in the event with the only NCAA 'A' qualifying time of the day at 1:08.42. Kirk met the NCAA 'B' qualifying standard to win the 200 breast in 2:13.93.

Caverly earned an NCAA 'B' mark to win the 200 meter back in 2:14.97, while swimming 1:02.97 in the 100.

Hentzen, last year's Pan American Games champion in the 800 free, went 8:51.28 in the 800, and 4:18.64 to win the 400 free.

Dana Kirk won the 100 fly in an NCAA 'B' time of 2:13.93. All races were short-course meters, which collegians now swim during an Olympic year.

Kelly, who coached wide receivers coach and was the associate head coach the past two seasons, served with Roof at Georgia Tech in 2000-01.

"David has been a tremendous asset to our football staff and our program," said Teevens. "We wish him and his family all the best at Duke."

Softball

Former Stanford star Jessica Mendoza and current Stanford sophomore Lauren Lappin were among the 15 players and three alternates named to the United States softball team which will train for the next seven months in preparation for the 2004 Olympic Games.

Mendoza, a collegiate All-American, makes her first Olympic team roster after being a consistent member of the USA National Team since the 2001 season.

Lappin was named one of the alternates. She makes her first appearance among the national team ranks.

Stanford coach John Rittman is an assistant for the team under Mike Candrea, who coaches at Arizona.
