The Eastside Prep boys' basketball team lost only two games last season while compiling a 28-2 mark, best in school history. One loss in 2003 was to Oakland High and the other came in the finals of the Northern California playoffs.

The Panthers avenged that setback to Oakland on Tuesday night with an impressive 58-37 nonleague triumph in East Palo Alto.

"This was a big win for us," said Eastside coach Chris Bischof, whose squad dominated both ends of the court while improving to 15-1.

The Panthers concentrated on allowing Oakland just one shot and pretty much succeeded. Oakland scored only twice on offensive rebounds, while Eastside often had two or three attempts every time down the court.

"They key for us is to keep them to one shot," said Bischof, whose team held Oakland to just one three-pointer in the second half. "We had to be in position to get the rebounds and, as the game went on, we were able to play smarter."

Eastside Prep grabbed a 31-15 advantage in rebounds with Keith Garner corralling 11 to go with 18 points, five steals and four assists. Myron Jordan added 13 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists. Stephen Waller added 12 points, many off offensive rebounds.

The Panthers' defense tightened in the second half and limited the Wildcats to just 12 points after intermission.

Elsewhere in boys' basketball Tuesday night:

Menlo School (1-0, 8-3) opened PAL North Division action with a 50-37 win over visiting Westmoor as Blake Schultz scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pace the Knights. Nick Schneider added 10 points and six rebounds. Menlo visits South San Francisco on Thursday.

In the Private Schools Athletic League, Sacred Heart Prep (3-0, 9-2) got 27 points from Tyler Holland and a solid defensive effort that sparked a 49-27 victory over host Woodside Priory. For Holland, it was his third straight game of 25 points or more. The Gators held Priory (1-3, 5-6) to just 10 first-half points.

In the Christian Private Schools League, Mid-Peninsula (1-0, 7-4) got a career-high 21 points and 12 rebounds from Walter Washington and another 21 points from Daron Maxie in a 53-51 win over visiting Liberty Baptist. Ben Capon, Kevin O'Farrell and Ryan O'Farrell provided the Dragons with a big lift off the bench.

In girls' basketball Tuesday night:

"Our defense definitely took (Lynbrook's) top scorers out of the game," said Paly coach Amy Stock. "Our defense led to some easy fastbreak baskets."

Paly jumped to a 30-12 halftime lead and never looked back. The Vikings visit Milpitas on Friday at 6 p.m.

In the West Bay Athletic League, junior guard Mika Peterman sat out the first half with a knee injury but returned in the second half and made two free throws with 1.4 seconds remaining to seal Castilleja's 41-39 victory over host Mercy-San Francisco.
