STANFORD ROUNDUP

Cardinal Cardinal (January 07, 2004)splash to swim win

Baseball threesome named to preseason All-American team

by Rick Eymer

Senior Peter Marshall and freshman Keenan Newman each won two events to lead the Stanford men's swimming team to a 146-77 victory over visiting Cal State Bakersfield in a nonconference meet on Saturday.

Thomas Brown, Scott Ransenberg, Markus Rogan and Bobby O'Bryan also swam to individual victories for the Cardinal, who travel to Michigan for an important two-day meet on Friday and Saturday.

Michigan is the defending Big Ten champion, while Stanford won the Pac-10 title last year. The Cardinal own a 9-4 all-time record in dual meets against the Wolverines.

Michigan last won the NCAA title in 1995, with Stanford finishing second. The Wolverines were ninth in last year's NCAA meet while Stanford finished third.

Against Cal State Bakersfield, the Stanford 200 medley relay team, consisting of Jayme Cramer, Rogan, Hongzhe Sun and Andy Grant, also swam to victory in 1:35.56.

Newman out-touched Sun (9:31.91) to win the 1,000 free, 9:31.88 to 9:31.91. He came back to swim 57.11 in winning the 100 breast.

Marshall won the 200 free in 1:40.59 and the 500 free in 4:34.83.

Ransenberg won the 100 fly in 52.05, Brown won the 200 IM in 1:52.32, Rogan took the 100 fee in 46.14, and O'Bryan won the 100 back in 50.04.

Stanford also won the 200 free relay in 1:24.32.

Stanford returns home on Saturday, Jan. 17 against Pacific.
Baseball

Stanford senior Sam Fuld, junior Danny Putnam and sophomore John Mayberry, Jr. were named to Baseball America's Preseason All-America teams.

Fuld and Putnam earned first team honors, while Mayberry, Jr. was a second team selection.

"All three of these players are among the top players in the nation," said Stanford coach Mark Marquess. "It's nice to continue to see them get the recognition they deserve with their hard work, outstanding performances and excellent potential."

Fuld is a two-time All-American who returned to Stanford despite getting drafted in the 24th round of the amateur draft by the Chicago Cubs last June.

Stanford, ranked No. 6 in the nation in Collegiate Baseball's preseason Division I poll, opens the season by hosting No. 8 Cal State Fullerton in a three-game series beginning Friday, Jan. 30.
Women's volleyball

Stanford junior outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani was named one of four finalists announced for the Volleyball Honda Sports Award.

The All-American is joined by Kele Eveland (Georgia Tech), April Ross (USC) and Kim Willoughby (Hawaii). The winner, after nationwide balloting, will become a nominee for The Honda-Broderick Cup awarded annually to the nation's outstanding collegiate woman athlete of the year.
Wrestling

Stanford dropped its Pac-10 opener to host Arizona State on Sunday, 24-17, as part of the Sun Devil Duals in Tempe.

The Cardinal (0-1, 3-3) split two other dual meets on the day, beating Embry-Riddle, 46-7, and losing to West Virginia, 22-14.

Mark Gentry and Imad Kharbush each won in all three matches.

Gentry finished third at the Midlands Invitational last week in Evanston, Ill. He finished 5-1 in the tournament.

Freshman Tanner Gardner reached the third round of the tournament before falling to top-seeded Luke Eustice of Iowa, 4-2, in overtime.

Stanford hosts Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday at 1 p.m.
