CARDINAL CORNER . . . Stanford senior Luke Powell and junior Oshiomogho Atogwe were named winners of the Irving S. Zeimer Award as the team's Most Valuable Players while senior Kirk Chambers won two awards and was named one of three team captains at the annual Football Awards Banquet on Sunday. Chambers was awarded the Vardell Award for excellence in academics and athletics and the Al Masters Award for "leadership and respect of his teammates." He was named one of three team captains along with Powell and Brett Pierce. Other award winners include Mark Bradford (top freshman), Babatunde Oshinowo (top sophomore), Jared Newberry (aggressiveness and unheralded efforts), Eric Johnson and Brian Gaffney (top special teams players), Mikal Brewer and Michael Okwo (top service team players) and J.R. Lemon and Amon Gordon (top back and lineman in The Big Game) . . . The Stanford women's tennis team defeated host Hawaii, 6-1, on Friday as defending NCAA singles champion Amber Liu led the way with a straight set victory at No. 1 singles. Highly touted freshman Teresa Logar won at No. 2 singles.

PREP ROUNDUP . . . The Gunn High boys' soccer team will put its 4-0 record on the line this week, which features three nonleague games. The Titans, who hosted Prospect on Tuesday, welcome Saratoga on Thursday (3:30 p.m.) before visiting Valley Christian-San Jose on Saturday at 1:45 p.m. Gunn is coming off a 7-0 victory over Lynbrook last Saturday in the opening round of the Homestead Christmas Cup tournament. Pablo Rivera scored three goals and had one assist while Ryan McDermott added a goal and an assist and Gilmar Arellano contributed two assists and one goal. Rivera also scored two goals last week in a 3-2 nonleague win over host Homestead. Palo Alto and Menlo-Atherton, meanwhile, also opened the Christmas Cup tournament with victories. The Vikings (2-1) handed Seaside a 4-0 loss as Manny Barrigan scored two goals and Jean Choi added two assists. Menlo-Atherton (1-1) edged Los Altos, 1-0, on a goal by Edgar Lara. In boys' basketball, the annual Gator Classic opens Wednesday at Sacred Heart Prep with Palo Alto (1-0) facing Mid-Peninsula at 5 p.m., Menlo-Atherton taking on Mountain View at 6:30 p.m. and Sacred Heart Prep hosting Hillsdale at 8 p.m. The girls' version of the Gator Classic continues Thursday with the Menlo-Presentation winner facing the Menlo-Atherton/Notre Dame-Salinas winner at 6:30 p.m. and the Santa Cruz-Eastside Prep winner taking on the Sacred Heart Prep-University winner at 8 p.m. .
