CARDINAL CORNER . . . Stanford men's swimming coach Skip Kenney is one of eight individuals to be inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2004. Kenney coached the men's team at the 1996 Olympic Games after serving as the assistant coach of both the men's and women's teams at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics. He was the assistant coach of the women's team at the 1994 World Championships and the head coach at the 1993 Pan Pacific Championships. He has coached 11 Olympic swimmers to 11 Olympic medals. Kenney, a six-time NCAA Coach of the Year, has coached the Stanford men's swimming team since 1979, winning a total of seven NCAA titles during that time. He is a 15-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year who has led the Cardinal to a Pac-10 record 22 consecutive conference titles. Kenney has coached a total of 93 All-Americans to 785 All-America honors and developed 63 NCAA champions during his tenure on The Farm. ... Stanford sophomore Josh Childress was named one of 17 finalists to the United States Pan American Games team. The 12-member team will be finalized in July. "This is going to be a good opportunity," said Childress. "We have a great group of guys and they are some of the best players in the nation." ... Stanford's KC Corkery, Scott Lipsky and David Martin were all named to the 2003 ITA Men's Tennis All-America Team ... Stanford junior Lauren Barnikow, sophomore Erin Burdette and freshmen Alice Barnes and Amber Liu all earned All-American tennis honors from the ITA. ... The Stanford men's varsity eight defeated traditional Ivy League standouts Princeton, Yale and Penn in its final to finish ranked 14th overall at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association's National Championship Regatta on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
MALIZA JOINS QUAKES . . . The San Jose Earthquakes signed Stanford grad Johanes Maliza
to a developmental contract. Maliza was picked in the fifth round by the Quakes, and has been recovering from a severe right hamstring strain. Maliza played in 79 career games at Stanford, sixth most in school history, and was named to the All Pac-10 First Team in 2002 as well as the All Far West First Team while scoring eight goals and registering six assists. Maliza is the Earthquakes fourth roster protected player on the team, joining Stanford grad Roger Levesqu, Arturo Alvarez, and Jamil Walker.
A DAY OF GOLF . . . The Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a day of golf at the Palo Alto Hills Country Club on Monday, June 16. The day includes a round of golf, a box lunch, BBQ dinner reception, prizes and tee gifts, and a raffle. The cost is $250, or $30 for dinner only. Golfing starts at 10 a.m. followed by the BBQ and raffle. Sponsorships are also available. A DAY OF TRACK AND FIELD . . . SOCCER TRYOUTS . . . The Stanford Blaze, a girls' under-11 CYSA team in the fall will hold tryouts on Tuesday, June 17 and 24 at 5 p.m. The team practices in Palo Alto. The CYSA Alpine Stampede will hold tryouts for the fall season on June 4 and June 6 from 4:30-6:15 p.m. at Woodland School in Ladera. Girls born between Aug. 1, 1990 and July 31, 1991 are welcome to attend a few practices with current team members and to try out. VOLLEYBALL CAMPS . . . The Stanford women's volleyball program has added two day camp dates to its summer schedule. The camps, which run from 9 a.m. until noon, will be offered August 9 and 16 for first through eighth graders at a cost of 40 dollars per session. Join the Stanford Volleyball youth fan club, open to kids 14 and under, and receive the inaugural Stanford Super Spikers T-shirt, two free clinics, and an invitation to an ice cream social with the Stanford Volleyball team. COACHES NEEDED . . . Mid-Peninsula High will be expanding its athletic program next school year and is looking for coaches for some of the new sports. The Dragons need a varsity head coach for the boys' and girls' soccer and volleyball teams, plus a girls' basketball head coach. In addition to girls soccer, the school is adding cross country for both boys and girls. Interested coaches should contact Mid-Peninsula Athletic Direction Chris Spano at 321-1991 (ext. 105) . . . Sacred Heart Prep is looking for the following coaches for the fall of 2003: assistant varsity football coaches, JV head football coach, JV and freshman water polo coaches, boys' freshman soccer coach, and varsity girls' cross-country coach.
