HALL OF FAME . . . Stanford University product Tim Mayotte has been selected as one of seven members of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame Induction Class of 2002. The class will be inducted in conjunction with the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships on May 22 in College Station, Texas. Mayotte will be the 10th Stanford player inducted into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame, and first since current men's assistant coach John Whitlinger in 1999. Other Stanford ITA Hall of Fame inductees are Ted Schroeder, Keith Gledhill, Alex Mayer, Roscoe Tanner, John Doeg, R. Lindley Murray, Robert Renker, Jon Douglas and John McEnroe. Mayotte, who played at Stanford in the 1979-80 and 1980-81 season, was the 1981 NCAA singles champion and led the Cardinal to the national team title that same season. He then went on to a distinguished professional career, and was ranked as high as No. 7 in the world in 1988. He reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 1982, the Australian Open semifinals in 1983 and was a silver medalist at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
TRYOUTS . . . Palo Alto Babe Ruth Baseball will hold tryouts on Saturday and again on March 10, both at Baylands Athletic Center. Tryouts for 13 year olds begin at 9 a.m., with 14 and 15s trying out at 1 p.m. For additional registration information, contact Craig Laughton at 856-1289 or at claught1@concentric.net . . . The CYSA Alpine Stampede soccer team is looking for five girls to join the team for the upcoming spring season. The team is for players 11 and under (girls born after July 31, 1990). Tryouts will be Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at Woodside Elementary School and again on March 10 at the same site and time. OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Stanford grad Regina Jacobs shattered the world indoor best for three miles last weekend, finishing in 14:44.11 at the Evian Mayor's Trophy Meet in New York. Jacobs eclipsed the previous best of 14:53.80 that had stood for 17 years. The 38-year-old Jacobs will run the mile at this weekend's USA Indoor Track & Field Championships . . . The Girl Scouts of Palo Alto will host a fun run on March 9 at 9 a.m. at Baylands Athletic Center. This City of Palo Alto Recreation-sponsored event features a 5K run and walk plus a one-mile walk. Those who want to pre-register (cost is $15 with a shirt) must do so by Feb. 25. Race-day registration ($15 without a shirt) will be from 8-8:45 a.m. Prizes will be awarded in the 5K run only, which begins at 9 a.m. The one-mile walk will start at 9:10 a.m. . . . The Palo Alto Men's Golf Club will host a St. Patrick's Day tournament on March 17 at Palo Alto Muni. The format is Two Saints (men) Scramble. Cost is $70 per person and includes lunch. The first tee time is 10 a.m., with prizes being awarded for the top three finishers, as well as closest to the hole, longest drive and target drive. Contact Gregory Whelan at 482-9007.
COACHING CORNER . . . Castilleja is looking for a head track coach, who specializes in the jumps and sprints, for the coming season. Palo Alto is looking for assistant swim coaches to join the staff headed by new head coach Hillary Biscay, a 2000 graduate of USC and a member of the Trojans' swim team.
