IN THE HALL . . . Former Stanford quarterback John Elway was one of 25 players inducted into the College Hall of Fame on Saturday. Elway said his one regret was that his father, Jack, who died April 15 at the age of 69, wasn't there to see him enshrined. "It breaks my heart because he was my mentor. He was my hero. He was my best friend. He was really one of the biggest reasons why I'm here today. College football was his love," he said. "He would have loved to have been here and walked through the Hall of Fame. But I know he's here in spirit." Elway passed for 9,349 yards at Stanford, completing 774 of 1,246 passes for 77 touchdowns and finished second to Herschel Walker for the Heisman Trophy in 1982 . . . Former Stanford football John Ralston and former Stanford gridiron great Ernie Nevers were named to the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame and will be inducted during ceremonies on Nov. 7. Ralston coached nine years at Stanford, winning the 1970 and 1971 Rose Bowls. Nevers earned 11 athletic letters at Stanford in football, baseball, basketball and track. Nevers, who died in 1976, was named the best college football player ever by Sports Illustrated in 1962. He rushed for 114 yards on bad ankles in a 27-10 loss to Notre Dame in the 1925 Rose Bowl.

CARDINAL CORNER . . . With Stanford junior Logan Tom recording a team-high 41 kills the first weekend, and earning the Crowd Favorite award the second weekend, the United States women's national volleyball team takes a 4-2 record into the third weekend of the FIVB World Grand Prix. Team USA won two of three matches in Thailand the first weekend, beating Germany and Russia, but losing to Korea. Last weekend in Chinese Taipei, the Americans beat Korea and Russia, but lost to Cuba. The U.S. meet China, Cuba and Germany this weekend in Harbin, China before the finals are held in Macau beginning Aug. 22 . . . Stanford senior Lee Morrison and Stanford sophomore Ally Marquand were named preseason soccer All-Americans by Collegesoccer.com. Morrison was a men's first team selection, while Marquand was a women's second team pick . . . Stanford hired Carrie Davis to coach the women's crew team. Davis has been an assistant at the University of Wisconsin the previous three seasons. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1995, where she helped win a gold medal at the Dad Vail Regatta.

COACHES WANTED . . . Woodside Priory is looking for a girls' varsity volleyball coach for the 2001 season. The Panthers are the defending Division V state champions. Former head coach Dustin Moore left Priory to become the women's volleyball assistant coach at Santa Clara University. Persons interested in the Priory position should contact athletic director Mark Stogner as 851-6107. Practice begins in two weeks . . . Approximately 40 coaches for the upcoming fall season are needed to staff the after school programs at JLS, Jordan and Terman middle schools. The athletic program requires a Monday-through-Friday commitment. Practices are held from 3:15-4:30 p.m. Games are between 4-7 p.m. Coaches are certified through the National Youth Sports Coaches Association, an organization that is dedicated to improving youth sports in America. OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Palo Alto Babe Ruth is now accepting Fall Ball applications for its league starting in September. Deadline for signing up is August 24. To obtain forms, visit the league's web site at www.paloaltobaberuth.com. Return mail and contact information is included on the forms. The cost is $120. Players need to be at least 12 years of age and no longer in Little League and no older than 15 by Aug. 1, 2002.

SUMMER SOCCER . . . The Stanford Thunder, an under-12 boys CYSA team, is seeking experienced players. Tryouts are held each Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the JLS Middle School field. For more information, contact Abdul Hakim at 424-1642 . . . The Palo Alto Soccer Club is seeking players, boys and girls, for its 2001-02 CYSA season. Major League Soccer (MLS) and the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) are sponsoring an MLS soccer camp that will be coming to Palo Alto between August 20 and 24. The camp will be held at Cubberley fields and is open to those between the ages of 5 and 18. It will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day and costs $130 per player.
