HAINES RECOVERING . . . Legendary swimming coach George Haines, who coached the women's swim team at Stanford between 1981 and 1988, suffered a massive stroke earlier this week but appears to be recovering. Haines won a national title for Stanford in 1983 and had three NCAA second-place finishes to his credit. He has also coached the U.S. Olympic team from 1960 to 1984, producing some 48 Olympians, 49 national titles and 300 All Americans holding more than 150 world records during that span. Some notable swimmers whom Haines has coached include Mark Spitz, John Hencken, Donna deVarona, Chris Von Saltza, Don Schollander, Steve Clark, Claudia Kolb and Pablo Morales.

OF LOCAL NOTE . . .
Palo Alto Post 375 came from behind Thursday Night to beat the Lafayette Generals 12-9 in a first-round game in the American Legion Area 2 Tournament in Union City. After Lafayette knocked out starter and Gunn star Greg Matson by scoring eight runs in the first three innings, Post 375 scored at least one run from the third inning onward. Gunn's Ray Hunter had five RBI, including a grand slam in the fifth inning. Palo Alto totaled 17 hits in all, led by Gunn graduate Anthony Rea and Paly's Eric Zawojski, who had four hits each. Post 375 played its next game last night . . . Gunn grad Dustin Steward made his mark at the Charlie Wedemeyer all-star high school football game on Wednesday, netting a touchdown with 49 seconds left in the second quarter and helping lead the North over the South 24-17. Paly's Timi Wusu, who will be attending Stanford this fall and is listed on the football roster, also participated in the game.

NOTEWORTHY . . . The Bair Island Aquatic Center (BIAC) of Redwood City will be hosting a rowing camp for 9th-12th graders from Aug. 6-18. The camp will be held Monday through Saturday and will go from 8-11:30 a.m. each day. The aim of the camp is to develop skills in basic boat handling, water safety, sweep technique and team development . . . Palo Alto Babe Ruth is now accepting Fall Ball applications for its league starting in September. Deadline for signing up is August 24. To obtain forms, visit the league's web site at www.paloaltobaberuth.com. Return mail and contact information is included on the forms. The cost is $120. Players need to be at least 12 years of age and no longer in Little League and no older than 15 by Aug. 1, 2002 . . . Menlo-Atherton High is looking for a boys' varsity water polo coach for the 2001 season. Interested persons should contact the school's athletic director, Pam Wimberly, at 322-5311 (ext. 5706).

SUMMER SOCCER . . . The Stanford Thunder, an under-12 boys CYSA team, is seeking experienced players. Tryouts are held each Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the JLS Middle School field. For more information, contact Abdul Hakim at 424-1642 . . . The Palo Alto Soccer Club is seeking players, boys and girls, for its 2001-02 CYSA season. Major League Soccer (MLS) and the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) are sponsoring an MLS soccer camp that will be coming to Palo Alto between August 20 and 24. The camp will be held at Cubberley fields and is open to those between the ages of 5 and 18. It will run from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. each day and costs $130 per player.
