ON THE RUN . . . Stanford track coach Vin Lananna is hoping one last chance will help propel Palo Alto resident Kim Fitchen onto the United States track and field team for the World Championships to be held in Edmonton, Canada beginning Aug. 3. Lananna is organizing a women's 10,000-meter run for Monday at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field at 9 p.m. Monday happens to be the final day for athletes to make their 'A' standards needed to make the national team. The standard for the 10,000 meters is 32:00.00. Fitchen, who trains with the Stanford-based Nike Farm Team, finished fourth in the nationals in Eugene in the 10,000 in a time of 32:38.38. The top two finishers, Deena Drossin and Jen Rhines met the standard, each running under 32 minutes last year. Third-place finisher Sylvia Mosqueda, has not. Fitchen, age 32, was the U.S. leader in the event (32:14.64) earlier in the season, and has still run the second-fastest U.S. time of the year behind Rhines (32:05.14). Lananna is hoping for about 16 women to participate in the race to help Fitchen reach the standard. Fitchen was a member of the USA cross-country team, which earned a bronze medal at the World Cross Country Championships this year. Interested athletes can contact the Stanford track office at (650) 723-2736. Stanford senior Gabe Jennings, who finished fourth at the nationals in the men's 1,500 meters, has met the standard and will likely join Seneca Lassiter and Paul McMullen at the world championships unless Andy Downin, who won the event at the national meet, reaches the standard by Monday.
WHAT A RACKET . . . Stanford grad Alex Kim is a wild-card entry in the $50,000 Seascpae Challenger tennis tournament, which got underway on Monday at the Seascape Sports Club in Aptos. Former Stanford player Geoff Abrams is also entered. The Challenger, part of the USTA professional circuit, runs through Sunday, July 22. France's Anthony Dupuis, ranked No. 65 on the ATP tour, is the highest ranking player ever at the event. For information, call (831) 688-1993.
