Thursday
Two new Richard Diebenkorn exhibits are opening at the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, one focusing on the paintings, watercolors, prints and drawings owned by collector Carey Stanton and the other including large gouaches and monotypes. Both shows run through Nov. 9, open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursdays until 8. Go to museum.stanford.edu or call 650-723-4177.

Singer Ann Gibson and pianist Frederick Hodges perform ragtime, hit songs and piano solos (think Irving Berlin and Cole Porter) at a free concert from noon to 1 p.m. at Cogswell Plaza at Lytton Avenue and Ramona Street in Palo Alto. "Doubt, A Parable," a play by John Patrick Shanley, is at the Lucie Stern Theatre at 1305 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto through Aug. 10, presented by TheatreWorks. Tickets are $21-$64. Go to www.theatreworks.org or call 650-903-6000.

"Pecos Bill," a musical, is being performed by the Palo Alto Children's Theatre's summer conservatory today at 2:30 p.m. and Friday at 7:30 p.m. The tale features dancing cows and a cowboy who rides tornadoes. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children. Call 650-463-4970.


Friday
A ballroom-dancing evening kicks off at 8 p.m. with West Coast Swing lessons for beginning and intermediate levels; a general dance party follows from 9 p.m. to midnight. The event is in the Cubberley Community Center Pavilion at 4000 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto; tickets are $8, with free refreshments. Saturday

John Bentley, chef and owner of the John Bentley's restaurant in Woodside and Redwood City, joins fellow chefs Isaac Miller (231 Ellsworth in San Mateo) and Josiah Slone (Sent Sovi in Saratoga) at Kepler's Books at 2 p.m. to talk and sign copies of San Francisco Cuisine.
