Palo Alto Baylands Preserve

Located at the east end of Embarcadero Road, the preserve offers miles of trails for hiking and biking along the salt marshes and sloughs. Trails connect with Shoreline Park in Mountain View providing the opportunity for even longer hikes and rides. Prime area for bird-watching. Also visit the Palo Alto Duck Pond and explore the San Francisco Bay ecosystem with the assistance of the Lucy Evans Baylands Nature Preserve Interpretive Center. Boardwalk runs over the tidal salt marsh. The center's hours are Tues.-Fri. 2 p.m.-5 p.m. and Sat. and Sun. 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Closed Mondays. On Saturdays and Sundays: videos at 1 and 4 p.m.; slide show on salt marsh life at 2 p.m.; nature walks with naturalists at 3 p.m.; open ecology workshop in the afternoons. Hikes and other programs offered. Nature camp in the summer, two-week sessions, $110. School field trips with naturalists offered. Building available for rental. Nearby picnic area with no reservations required. Call 329-2506 to find out about group and free programs.
