Let's face it, none of us wants to pay taxes. And the taxes that we do pay cover things like infrastructure, schools, among other things. So, I am troubled that our local company, Apple, apparently has a legion of lawyers and accountants that enable it to avoid paying taxes in this country. This ia a moral and ethical issue, not a legal or tax issue.

Skelly posts local official's letter re Duveneck OCR bullying case

Superintendent Kevin Skelly Friday posted a letter to the PAUSD website from a Palo Alto city official that describes the OCR bullying complaint at Duveneck Elementary School as "blown up out of proportion." See http://pausd.org/community/board/Weekly/051713_weekly.pdf Claude Ezran, a member of Palo Alto's Human Relations Commission, and his wife sent the letter to Skelly on May 12. [Portion removed by Palo Alto Online staff.] The post follows OCR's warning to Skelly that an email from the Duveneck principal to parents threatened the victim's privacy rights. OCR admonished Skelly to ensure that PAUSD treat the Duveneck case with the seriousness appropriate to potential violations of federal civil rights law, and reminded� Skelly that retaliation against the complainant would itself violate federal law. A RITUAL CHEESE CRACKING ... The new gourmet grocery store The Fresh Market will forgo the usual ribbon cutting in favor of a cheese-cracking ceremony when it opens its new store at Edgewood Plaza Shopping Center in Palo Alto on June 5. Perhaps befitting a gourmet store, the cheese cracking will follow an age-old Italian tradition of breaking open a 95-pound wheel of Reggiano Parmigiano cheese using traditional cracking rather than cutting tools, Rachel Booker, hiring manager, said this week. A possible boon to summer-job-seeking students, the store plans to hire 95 employees, she said. The store is the first phase of redevelopment at the shopping center, which will preserve historic Eichler retail buildings and add 10 new homes. FLEMING'S ON THE MOVE ... Big plans are on the horizon for Fleming's Steakhouse at Stanford Shopping Center. Construction recently began for the steakhouse's new stand-alone building. "The shopping center is expanding and asked us to relocate, because Bloomingdale's will be building a new location in front of our restaurant," Fleming's owner-operator Wayne Hanseth said. Neither Stanford nor Bloomingdale's execs were available to comment on the upscale store's plans. Meanwhile, Stanford has chosen the mall's parking lot, near the El Camino Real entrance to the shopping center, for the new location of Fleming's. When construction is completed, the restaurant will measure 7,000 square feet, about 1,800 square feet larger than the current one. "We'll be adding another dining room, so we'll have a total of three private dining rooms and also three patios," Hanseth said, adding that the restaurant's bar will also expand to double its current size to create more of a "lounge atmosphere." Other changes for Fleming's include a new style for the interior of the restaurant and a plan to begin Sunday brunches in September. Hanseth estimates the new restaurant will begin doing business on Aug. 9. The current Fleming's will remain open throughout the construction of the new facility.
