There is an article in this morning's NYT (07.08) about the future of cities when driverless cars become a reality--unless Washington kills the idea.
Most observers think that it's a good 8-10 years off before we see driverless cars sold by the major car manufacturers, but that doesn't mean that local service providers might not be able to experiment with them--offering those who are no longer able to drive legally rides via driverless vehicles.
Radio communications, and in-vehicle voice control would allow the riders to talk to the car directly, and to "home base", if necessary for unexpected situations.
Over time, we would have to expect that taxi services would be offering driverless vehicles also.
