why are Spare The Air days not announced here?

Original post made by parent on Jun 7, 2013

Today and tomorrow are Spare The Air days. When heavy air pollution is forecasted for the Bay Area, we can make a difference by avoiding driving and keeping our kids away from polluted areas. Spare The Air days are announced 24 hours in advance. Why are they not publicized on Palo Alto Online? Do Palo Alto people not care about air pollution?

Yeah, the air is really hot and still today ... and some idiot in my neighborhood is burning something. It really should be announced and explained.

What is really downright cruel, is that on the "unannounced" spare-the-air days that occur during the school year, PAUSD students are often forced to have outdoor PE, which is illegal and dangerous, especially for kids with asthma!

> We can always depend on CPA for a kind word about those whom he disagrees with

Since the Palo Alto Online did not see fit to delete this inaccurate personal attack and just general nasty sarcastic comment under their own terms of service, I will respond.

While it's true that I don't have kind words for people who burn things in my neighborhood on spare the air days, this is not a question of disagreement. During spare the air times it is unlawful to burn things, plus it is downright unneighborly and inconsiderate ... that is not a disagreement, that is fact. At such times when there is no breeze smoke just hangs in the air - and it's no fun to breathe.
