Gas line leak survey

Today's Grab Bag blurb reports, "Don't panic ..." regarding the gas line leak survey going on in our neighborhood by so-called "card-carrying gas-leak experts." I did panic last week when I looked out my back door and found three contractors standing in my back yard. They had entered through a closed (but unlocked at the time) side gate. They were looking for our gas meter, which is clearly in the parkway next to the curb in front of our house. They had no ID cards and no drawings to indicate where existing meters and lines are located. They said they didn't knock on the front door because they had too many houses to do in too little time. I didn't call the police, but I did call their contact at the city utilities department to report the incident. I would definitely not consider these guys "card-carrying gas-leak experts" as reported in the Grab Bag blurb today. Experts would have contractor ID cards, not enter through closed gates without advance warning or permission, and would carry information on existing gas line and meter locations (which are rarely in back yards of residential homes).
