Is this something new, having an outside professional (?) moderator lead the retreat?
Is it something that is a trend on these these retreats, or is it an admission that they are unable to keep on track themselves and need someone to help them toe the line?
I don't mean to be facetious, I am interested. I am also interested to know how much such a moderator costs.

Is it common practice to hold open session during the day time? Is it assumed that all public interested in attending the session do not need to work? or can just skip a work day?

I believe it is customary to have a moderator - yes, a professional one. I am pretty certain they had one the last time or the time before that, when I dropped by.
I believe it is customary to have it during the day on a weekday, though I think it is a good point that they may limit attendance. I believe that there are usually only a handful of outside attendees - though given the dryness of the material, I'm not sure changing the time would make much difference. But it might.
