Town Square

Adios Midtown ARCO Gas Station

Original post made by Paul Losch on Aug 25, 2010

I drove along Middlefield today and saw that the long dormant ARCO gas station was being razed.

It has been an eyesore for years, so I view this as progress. What I don't know is what the plans are for that land parcel.

I would have loved to see it built out with a city owned and operated gymnasium, to accmodate the demand by volleyball and basketball teams that have to go outside of Palo Alto to play many of their games--we just don't have the capacity here town to meet the requirements of such teams and leagues.

I suspect the developer of the property has other plans for the place. Anybody know what those plans are?

The only things developers are building these days are ugly condos and box houses.

Paul,

If you read this forum regularly, as an honored blogger should, you would have seen this recent thread which answers your questions.

Resident,

Thanks for the information. I do have a day job and cannot track every thread.

I am of the opinion that the plan as described is a bad use of the site. Just another example of the developers having different incentives and motivations that may not be in the best interests of the community at large.

A marvelous opportunity for someone to buy this property and give it to the city.

Offices and residences on top?!! Goodness, our schools are already overpacked! That's the last thing we need!

Mum - the ABAG wants Palo Alto to build almost 3000 more housing units by 2014 than it had in 2007...you think we are overcrowded now!
