Flying the American Flag on Memorial Day

Original post made by R. Donan, Old Palo Alto, on May 31, 2006

In driving through my neighborhood in Palo Alto, I noticed a lack of U.S. flags on residents' homes. It was Memorial Day, one of the most significant days of the year for Americans to pause and pay homage to the young men and women who've gone before us in serving our country. Albeit residents restrained from flying their flags, few of us flew it for our own reasons.

I totally agree! I'm out of my house for a renovation project, but if I were home, I'd be flying Old Glory.

I believe that many of us here who are very cognizant of what is going on oversees and how the president is handling the war. I believe in supporting our troops, but many of us are embarrased by how much wrong the white house has been involved in.

Whenever I go back to the old PA neighborhoods, I feel sad for all us who were pushed out by the those who were, and, or pursuing the great American dream. Owning, and selling a home for PROFIT!
I served in the USN after graduating from Paly (1977), and when I returned to PA with a sailors uniform on, I was outcasted by many of home owners who were flying the old glory.
Think again about what the flag stands for!
To me, it stands for those feel comfortable buying multi millon dollar homes, and fly the flag to show that they are free and very rich!
Maybe if the past generation passed the many rent control, and housing control bills back in the 60's and 70's, you would see more of the American flag flying on the front porch!
Wake up everyone. Palo Alto is home of the RICH, not the free!
