Better for everybody. Though the kids at Paly did get up for it - applying a whooping to Gunn on a regular basis. Probably not great for Gunn self esteem of its student-athletes.
Other sports are a different situation.

I am very saddened by this news.
I think the competitiveness or lack thereof is the wrong way to look at this.
My Paly kids, who were ex JLS, love attending this game. They are not interested in football, but love the atmosphere and the small town feel of the game. They buy t shirts, wear school colors, meet up with pals from Gunn that they know from JLS days, or Little League or AYSO days, they tailgate, they know the players, the band members and it is one of the highlights of the fall.
Yes, they know and the Gunn kids know that this is a onesided game, but that doesn't worry them. They try to guess by how many, laugh together with old friends, and for one evening they feel like small town kids having an evening of fun.
Playing a different team is not going to produce this evening of fun. Competitiveness is not something we should expect all the time for them, for one evening, it is not about the game, but about the event. It is not about watching the game, it is about the experience of comeraderie in town. They call it the "Little Big Game" because that is what it is. It is cross town rivalry, friendship, stress relief and high school memories. Taking this away from our kids is taking away something important. Something more important than football.
