I do not follow football at the college or professional level, but out of local interest, I decided to check out the score of the Oklahoma/Stanford game which took place on New Year's Eve. The Sooners won, but it was a close game, which suggests it was a good one.
I was startled when I went on the Yahoo! sports page to get my update. I counted 25 different Bowl games. And the sponsorship and names of the bowls adds to the absurdity. Here is a selection:
Chick-fil-a-Bowl: Virginia Tech -vs-Tennessee (This one is over the top!)
Insight Bowl: Minnesota -vs- Iowa State
Humanitarian Bowl: Bowling Green -vs- Idaho
PapaJohn's.com Bowl: South Carolina -vs- Connecticut (this one really gets me, the dot com moniker seems both outdated and not Papa's core business--don't they sell Pizza?)
Here is a list of some other "sponsored" bowl games:
Outback (You know, the company that just settled a class action suit with female employees around promotion and compensation policies, I am sure the second rate color man on this game will wax eloquent on how nice it is that the suit was settled before the Bowl game this year.)
And there is a panoply of other bowls with names that do not have clear roots.
Of course there continue the usual suspects, but it all seems to have become wretched excess.
Grab the guacamole and the Doritos, America! There is a ton of football to occupy our country's time right now. The new decade is off to a great start!
